Should a player's handicap drop when he reaches a certain age?

The best league player I ever played against was about 70 years old and he beat everybody even though he was way past his prime.

I am NOT advocating to get my handicap reduced ... lol But, say a guy turns
75 or 80, would he then be entitled to a one level reduction? Hell, it has been discussed on here about player's ages, and said that players are over the hill when they hit 50.

I do feel like the subject has some merits for discussion.

If the handicap isn't "self-adjusting" because the player is no longer in league, or doesn't play frequently enough, then I guess he'll have to overcome the spot or maybe find barbox tournaments where hawk eyes aren't needed. I'm not in favor of automatic adjustment just because someone had a birthday.

The thing about 9 (we're talking APA 9 right?) is that it covers everyone from no-name locals who aren't quite shortstops to efren reyes.

Personally, I doubt efren was hitting balls much differently at 49 than he was at 50. How would you feel if he entered that tournament as an 8?

Do you think that you will regress because you are one day older? I am almost 67 and play better now than I did 10 years ago. I keep practicing, studying pool and also do physical workouts such as P90X and Insanity, order the Asylum and plan on starting that.

I am in better shape than my younger team mates and I would feel insulted if they lowered my handicap because I am over 65. I never wore glasses until I became around 55. Never let them bother me or accepted that as an excuse for long my ability to play. I don't think it affects Karen's game.

I guess if your playing ability starts to fade than they should lower it accordingly.

There were a few of local players that went to the Super Billiards Expo and got into the Seniors and Super Seniors tournaments. They came back amazed that the Super Senior Tournament was harder than the Seniors. They said those old F'er can play. They said that they would have had a better chance in the regular tournament.

Since my birthday is a week away, and I will be 65, I have to ask the question whether a player's handicap should drop, and at what age would you consider it proper to do so???

All of us older players know that you can not maintain the same level of play that you did when you were younger, because of eyes going bad, physical stamina is not the same, concentration problems, loss of physical strength, etc..

Most of us play in tournaments where we are rated a certain speed, whether it be weekly tournaments, or special tournaments.

i havent read any responces:o
your handicap shouls be base on who beat you and who did you beat
age is irrelevant
but
who beats you and who you beat will change from 25 years old and 65 years old

Book,

I resemble that remark! I was one of those old f'ers. May not be able to cut balls at 91 degrees anymore but I've got experience. As an old addage goes "old age and treachery will beat youth and exuberance every time"! Beat a few of those youngsters in the Open as well!

Now, all you guys know once you become known to be a certain speed and handicap, they do not adjust down, at least around here they don't. And even if you shot bad for awhile (meaning 1 level less), then you would have to shoot 4 or 5 years that bad before anyone would adjust your handicap.

There are some handicap level systems that adjust with each match you play, but I am talking about when you are known as a 9 speed, and you play in a handicapped 9 ball tournament as a 9 handicap normally.

It will probably take 5 years to slowly loose skill though natural causes before it's really apparent, if the tournament does not adjust fairly, time to find another tournament. If someone starts to not win as they used to constantly, it's cause for an adjustment, same thing for winning. A guy that wins a tournament once but places 4-5-6 most of the time would not be ranked higher than a guy that ever won but keeps finishing 2-3-4 just because of that one win, or at least not higher for more than one more tournament.

Do they make you stop driving at a certain age or only when you can't pass the tests for a license?
