to have a powerful stroke should i feel a heavy backswing in my hand and stroke faster? or should i just stroke real slow like most people do? the guy who taught me has a very powerful stroke and he always strokes really fast and doesnt stop in practice strokes he practices and when hes ready he goes through.. no pause.. hes very good but it almost looks like bad form.. should i do that or stick with the slow practice strokes? i ask because latley i havent had the stroke that i used to have its been a little weak.. thanks for the help and sorry this was long

Your stroke should have nothing to do with your backswing. The key to a good stroke is keeping everything in line and following through. As long as you stroke straight and follow through you'll be fine.

I disagree.
To shoot straight and smoothly, your backswing has to be in line with the shot and smooth.

i honestly don't get what you mean powerful stroke = heavy backstroke. what is a "heavy" backstroke.

anyway, your friend does what he does, you do what you do. in sport, almost every "stroke" of a similar nature has a pause that allows one to gear up and follow through correctly and with power. ...your friend has an awkward stroke,,,,not you.

I like to decide how hard to stroke before taking the shot. Then after aiming is accomplished, I start to practice stroke, small at first, then crescendoing to the desired power until firing. Use some wrist, this helps power alot.

The purpose of the backstroke is to allow enough room to accelerate through the cue ball on the forward stroke. The speed of the backstroke should be smooth and relaxed and has no bearing on the speed of the forward stroke. At the end of the backstroke, there should be a pause. This allows for the transfer of momentum from one muscle group to the next.

Efren uses the same awkward stroke. Me too. And Mika. Most people don't notice Efren, he pauses before the last warmup stroke, not after.

I think a pause is a good thing. One of the most common habits among beginners is to jerk quickly back and then forward, even if they take a long time measuring up the shot. I think if noobs love it, it must be a bad habit =)

All the instructors on this forum seem to recommend a definite pause between back and forward. I think they're probably right, but when I need a powerful draw stroke sometimes I feel like I can't put the pause between back and forward. But my backswing itself isn't fast, and I don't recommend anyone rapidly jerk the stick back no matter what they plan on doing forward.

A very important lesson I learned while attending Pool School is to pay attention to my finish position.

I've been told, when doing practicing stroke, the practicing stroke must be equal fast as your final stroke. So if you want to hit the CB slowly, you should use a slow practicing stroke. When you want a powerful stroke with a lot of acceleration, you should have a fast practicing stroke. When you pull the trigger (final stroke), you should pause (your arm is still behind your back), so you can think for the last time if everything is in line, afther that you just stroke.

I read in one of byrne's books that it's almost impossible to practice swing as fast as you actually plan on stroking, at least with shots you plan on powering... so I dunno if that'll help you or not. A fast practice stroke that you have to jerk to a stop 1 inch before hitting the cue ball will be nothing like the smooth, fluid stroke w/follow through that you need to do.

Neither will a slow practice stroke that you have to jerk to a stop at the cue ball. But a faster practice stroke will be more like the actual shot stroke.

I think you should make your practice strokes as much like your planned shot stroke as possible, including the back strokes.
