in the last 2 tournaments...not just once, but twice, the opponent is texting while i am WAITING FOR HIM TO SHOOT! WTF? should we ask for the shot clock, outlaw the usage of a cell phone, throw the damn thing out the door? :angry: what do you think? it is another form of sharking to say the least but "come on". i really do not want to sit there and watch your texting expertise. what is your idea to avoid this?
 
I agree with you in principal.

And I am guilty upon occasion. Virtually all of my communication is done via text nowadays, with my family, and with my job. (Both my employees, and my direct supervisor.)

As such, I have to check my phone upon occasion. And while I know that I am only replying to a family or work concern, how would you or anyone else know? So I get it. (Though I usually say something to the effect and apologize, but that strays from the original point.)

I have played with and against those who seem to be "merely" texting, and I agree it can be annoying.
 
I agree in a tournament there should be no texting or phone calls. Its unlikely but possible that someone could be texting how to shoot or what to shoot.

If it happens enough to dramatically slow the match down....say something.

If its just every now and then, what's really your issue with it? It doesn't affect your ability to play.(unless you have some sort of mental hitch in your game and let it bother you, which you should fix, as its not different than your opponent running a few racks and you sitting in the chair)

Other than just not wanting to be "inconvenienced," what is your problem with it?
 
BCAPL rules prohibit use of electronic devices during a match. FIrst offense is a warning and a foul thereafter.

I usually do not have a problem with an opponent occasionally checking their phone but there are some who severely abuse them. What I often find more annoying is the use of headphones/earbuds - some players just tune out everything and you are left yelling or waving at them to get their attention.

The BCAPL rules are an excellent idea IMHO.
 
Really. This is something you just need to get past. It's not sharking and frankly, if your mental game is so bad that someone holding a phone in front of their face distracts you, you need to concern yourself more with YOUR ability/inability to focus and LESS with what someone else is doing.

If its happening so often your opponent is delaying the match (because he's texting when he should be at the table) I can understand. Apart from that, it should be none of your concern.

i'm an old guy so maybe you are a young guy...i learned the concept of "pure respect for others" which is lacking in our society today, if more of us adopted this we would surrely be better off.......:thumbup:
 
vapoolplayer....the texting is not a mere minute or so...that would not bother me...this texting is more than 3 or 4 minutes....it does not affect my play other than i have a "patience" problem and certainly not enough patience for this dork to act as though he "owns" my time too... i agree with the post above....asking the first time to cease and desist and the second time call the tournament director......so we are good..thanks for the replies

You are right. If more of us adopted the "repect for others" mindset our society would be better off. However that is not going to happen.

For the most part I am respectful when I shoot and respectful to others in general. I dont hold the match up unless I have something that I need to take care of. If you feel me wearing headphones when Im playing a stranger in a tourney disrespectful, well that's tough and your opinion.

One thing I dont like though is someone trying to make someone else conform to their beliefs which they feel are correct (when in fact they are from an older time). Today's world revolves around texting and mobile phones. All I can say is, get with the times and deal with.

If someone is holding the match up due to a text or some other non-match bullshit... I deal with it. I dont expect him to do what I want him to do or play the speed i want him to play. Just gotta suck it up.

Now if he is holding up the match on most of his turns then yeah, it's a problem and get the TD.

Shitty response from you as well. Something I would expect from someone from a time when headphones didn't detach from the 8-track and thinks I give a damn about what he expects.

I personally don't think texting is as much of an issue as headphones, earbuds or anything that stops someone from hearing what they're opponent may question.

Take away, rude, disrespectful, whatever, it prohibits someone from hearing their opponent.

I am not sure if it is VNEA or if its the 2 local leagues that I play that have "no headphones/earbud" rules, and I'm glad they do.

I use headphones and sometimes respond to a text. I don't find it disrespectful at all. How is waiting on me to chalk, get out a jump cue, finding a scuffer in my case, placing an order with a server, or thinking about what I'm going to do any different? Just be patient and play your game. You cannot shark someone who doesn't let things get to them. If you let something bother you, you're only sharking yourself and making excuses.

What if the headphones/ear buds do not prevent you from hearing your opponent? Like I said, I wear them in a match and never once had a problem where I couldnt hear my opponent say push or say something to me prior to the shot.

Most leagues around here banned them because you the player could receive coaching advice.
