should we make new tournament rule/ipods?

What if the headphones/ear buds do not prevent you from hearing your opponent? Like I said, I wear them in a match and never once had a problem where I couldnt hear my opponent say push or say something to me prior to the shot.

Most leagues around here banned them because you the player could receive coaching advice.

I think they take the stance is that they could prevent hearing - and likely don't feel that can regulate the volume to under 11. :-)

Shitty response from you as well. Something I would expect from someone from a time when headphones didn't detach from the 8-track and thinks I give a damn about what he expects.

Not sure what makes you think I'm an Old Man of the 8-track 70s. Perhaps, your youthful ignorance? I own all the tech you salivate over. I just know the difference between the time to 'communicate' and the time to 'play pool.'

I use headphones and sometimes respond to a text. I don't find it disrespectful at all. How is waiting on me to chalk, get out a jump cue, finding a scuffer in my case, placing an order with a server, or thinking about what I'm going to do any different? Just be patient and play your game. You cannot shark someone who doesn't let things get to them. If you let something bother you, you're only sharking yourself and making excuses.

I think the difference may be viewed that chalking, jump cue, etc is part of the game, and texting would not be.

Personally, don't give a rats asp what my opponent does within the rules, just want him/her to be able to respond to a question if I have one regarding a shot/game without needing to throw something their way.

[3rd grade voice][sarcasm]Oh yeah, well I bet I own more tech then you...[/3rd grade voice][/sarcasm]

Grow up.

It's not youthful ignorance, it's modern day common sense.

I'm not getting into a "My Dad can beat up your Dad" internet argument with you.

We both stated our opinions on the matter, yours just happened to attack mine. So for all intents and purposes, you win the internet argument. Congratulations. :thumbup2:

Speaking of placing orders and eating food, I played Gypsy once in a tournament at Castle Billiards. A short list of things he did during said match:

1) Order two cheeseburgers.
2) Eat two cheeseburgers.
3) Yell "The SLEDGER baby" every time he broke.
4) Complain to the TD that the room was too hot.
5) Kick my ass completely.
6) Entertain the hell outta me.

When comparing texting to that, texting seems like the quietest, most passive thing imaginable. Especially since 90% of the phones out there today are touch screen smart phones. You don't even hear the clicking of keys.

The gyprock was the master of getting under your skin and making you laugh. Miss that guy. I flew under his radar for years until he found out I was action. But those years he didn't know me, I knew him and learned. Gypsy gave me big weight every time we played. Too much. We only played 1p and banks. He never won a game. Between flipping coins, shooting "pop a shot" and pool, I had his number because I got in his head. I did exactly what he did, he had no idea how to deal with it. MOUSE TRAP, SET!!!

Last few months of his life, we had some fun battles. As he told someone, "I feel like I'm playing myself, I can't win" :)

Being made to wait drives me a little nuts too, but I feel this is a personal flaw.
I lack patience and let a tiny bit of rudeness irritate me.
I'd be a better player and probably a better human being if I let the small stuff roll right off my back.

It's not so much about the lost minute of time.
It's that this other guy doesn't mind making people wait on him.
It puts out this vibe that he doesn't care about you, and that your time takes a backseat to his.

That might actually be 100% true, and completely normal,
but in polite society we at least pretend to care.

When I see someone texting I actually feel like I have a tiny edge.
I personally can't flip my focus on and off like a light switch.
When I play a serious match, the phone goes on silent.
I hope the other guy is the same way and is playing a little distracted.

As someone that does text quite often and is commonly using email on my phone I believe it is up to the players to sort it out. If there is an issue tell your captain and have him talk to the other captain. This should solve any issue that there is. If it is a singles match then just politely talk to the guy and tell him your issue. If that does not resolve it then talk to someone higher if it is that big of a deal.
It has never happened to me, but it would annoy me if it did. IMO you are there to play pool. If there is something that is genuinely more important going on then you have no business playing pool. I have never even so much as looked at my phone while I am playing. I dont need that distraction.

in the last 2 tournaments...not just once, but twice, the opponent is texting while i am WAITING FOR HIM TO SHOOT! WTF? should we ask for the shot clock, outlaw the usage of a cell phone, throw the damn thing out the door? what do you think? it is another form of sharking to say the least but "come on". i really do not want to sit there and watch your texting expertise. what is your idea to avoid this?

Times...they are a changin.

I've actually witnessed a person use texting to cheat. An player for the other team was down on a shot when his phone chimed that he had a text. He went over, read the text, returned to the table and shot a completely different shot than what he was going to make just moments before. He did this a couple times before my teammate spoke up about not making it so obvious. Didn't happen again after that.

Interesting.

I have my phone out all the time when I am shooting. I have to because I am basically on 24hr call for my work.

I rarely text or call. If I need to, I will apologize to my opponent and ask him if I can take a second to do so.

As per the headphones, that is just plain rude if you haven't gotten the express permission of your opponent to use them. I actually have a reason which isn't simply because I am from an older time (which I'm not). When you have your in-ear music playing at 11, how are you supposed to hear me call a foul or ask what you are shooting at? Am I supposed to run up and tug on your shirt sleeve? Maybe I should meet your rudeness with the same level of rudeness and simply walk up and push you out of the way when you get down to shoot after a foul.

Devices that impede hearing should not be allowed.

dld

For the record, I've played with Icon several times and he is absolutely respectful of his opponents.

If you consider the wearing of ear phone / ear buds to be rude that is your problem, much like thinking that dressing like a slob shows disrespect. It is no one's problem but your own.

If the rules of a tournament haven't banned the use of headphones, it's allowed. End of discussion. If they haven't banned jump cues, they're allowed. End of discussion.

If your personal beliefs lead you to believe you're being sharked, then you are being sharked....by you.

Just my opinion, of course.

Have a nice day!

Fone Foul

At Midwest 9ball events Evelyn(TD-Ref) issues a warning, then a ball in hand foul, then loss of game. There is NO EXCUSE for having one's fone on during a match. Make it clear during players meeting, then drop the hammer on anyone using ANY electronic device during play.

Agreed this is the way to handle it.

There are some very important folks who would not be able to play pool if their outside life wasn't able to reach them. These are few and far between. For the most part those texting during matches are like those with chains on their wallets. Open that wallet, find no money. It's rude ass, attention deficit syndrome behavior and should not be tolerated. They have texting competitions out there. Go enter one of those and leave us pool players alone.

Some times my better half is playing games on the nook or reading blogs during my turn.... and then I have to wait... and wait.... and wait.... practically on every turn. It drives me absolutely bonkers, and I can't make it past one match with him.

I used to wear the ear buds to listen to music, because what ever is playing at the bar, was either karaoke or a live one man show singing Irish folk songs or that darn live trivia, at best it's the juke box playing some gawd-aweful death metal and drives me to kill someone with it's horrid beats. When I wore the buds I made sure to keep constant eye contact with the other player. I never had issue. Anyhow, the old lady that runs the APA league here told me it's against the rules to wear them because someone could be coaching me. Now I wear them until my match starts and after it's over. You know for the most part I never speak to my opponent during a match either, and I don't care to hear what they have to say, good or bad. Once the match is over I'm more than graceful, but nothing during game time. I'm not rude, I just don't care for the chatter.

It's just flat out inconsideration. Personally I turn off my ringer and put the phone where it can't bother me. I think they should be banned period.

Dont expect to ever hear that from your headphone wearing opponent.

The devices that headphones can be plugged into have a volume control. In some cases, the volume itself is location on the headphones even. Volume is this cool thing that allows things to be loud enough to not be able to hear anything or low enough to hear things outside the headphones while still being able to enjoy listening to what is coming out of the headphones. In my case it is the latter.

Maybe I should meet your rudeness with the same level of rudeness and simply walk up and push you out of the way when you get down to shoot after a foul.
You should do that to the first person that wears headphones that you play against. It obviously hasnt happened yet which makes me wonder how much pool you actually play. Im assuming it is pretty much only league where headphones are already banned. Best of luck picking your teeth up off the ground when you go up and push your opponent.

Well I think you've proven you don't need ear buds to be rude...

I was playing a friend one night who was constantly texting while I was shooting or it was his turn. I warned him a couple of times. I finally packed my cues and was at the counter ready to pay for my half of the time before he noticed that I was gone.

I'm here to play pool. If I wanted to be on the computer, I'd be at home instead of the hall.

I agree in a tournament there should be no texting or phone calls. Its unlikely but possible that someone could be texting how to shoot or what to shoot.

from "icon of sin"....Deal with it or don't enter the tournament.
i'm an old guy so maybe you are a young guy...i learned the concept of "pure respect for others" which is lacking in our society today, if more of us adopted this we would surrely be better off.......

I personally don't mind someone wearing ear buds or headphones however texting is a whole other issue. It's the same as taking a call during a match, don't do it.
Anyone who doesn't have the patience to wait till after their match is just plain inconsiderate, period. You shoot or you stand/sit and wait for your turn at the table. Most of you younger guys just don't get it, probably your parents fault. This is the same generation that gets a trophy just for participating  Instant gratification is a must
I personally turn my ringer off on my phone and check it when my match is over. What is so damn important that you can't do the same thing??? That question was directed at everyone who thinks it's okay to text or take a call during your match.
