Shy but wants to play

Doing so well......ho ho ho......the ups and downs of pool! As evidenced by Mondays and Tuesdays scores, the downs have won for this week.:embarrassed2:

Monday's BCA:
Game 1: 5 balls
Game 2: 7 balls (snookered on the 8)
Game 3: 7 balls (see game 2, grr)
Game 4: 1 ball (and my opponent gave me that one on the break and he derbied...nothing you can do about that)


Tuesday night's APA was horrid. I played a 3, just like me. Race to 2.

Game 1: Won
Game 2: Lost (will explain, my stupid fault)
Game 3: Lost (because of game 2 snafu messing up my head:angry:)

This was my first loss of the season (4 weeks) and I should have won game 2. But I had a killer headache and just wasn't in the game as much as usual. I had one ball left near a corner pocket. Opponent has to bank the 8. He calls his coach over, they're discussing it. His coach, though, fails to leave the table and actually has his finger on the rail where he wants him to put the 8 while he shoots it. It's very crowded with other leagues playing and people all over talking and stuff, and I was distracted by someone talking to me (here is where I fell down), and while I saw this happen and in my head thought, "Is that right?", after he missed the ball I walked right up and took my shot. The CB was now frozen to my object ball but I thought it was lined up perfectly........it wasn't. I missed by a fraction.

Meanwhile, my captain is talking to their captain, but no one stopped me from shooting. It never even registered that it could be ball in hand. They said I shot too fast for them to stop me, so I lost the game when he pocketed the 8 easily after my miss. I would have won if I had slowed down just a snick, and by then someone would have stopped me and I would have gotten ball in hand.

I was reamed out appropriately for this, and I have no excuse. That put me in a funk and I lost the 3rd game.

Lesson: Don't talk while you're in a match! I also learned that my attitude has a great deal of influence on how I play. Next time, even if I jab someone in the cojones with my cue and they stop, drop and roll, I will shake it off and feel bad after the match.:speechless:

Really enjoyed my time in your neck of the woods. We spent a lot of time at Black Diamond. It is very nice.
 
I'm glad! It's a nice place, eh? I wish we could've caught up and played some, although I've been trounced enough for the week.:thumbup:

Don't know if this will make ya feel better or not , but the situation wouldn't have warranted ball-in-hand anyway .
In APA league play , the only ball-in-hand fouls are the ones listed in the rulebook under fouls . All other 'play irregularities' are considered 'sportsmanship' issues .
The correct recourse for a coach who is holding his finger on the rail while his player is shooting is to tell him to stop. There are MANY offenses in the APA where the only recourse is to stop them before they have the chance to commit the offense . After it has been committed , you may only issue a 'sportsmanship warning' advising them not to do it again . Usually , a player may receive 2 sportsmanship warnings , and only a 3rd offense would result in ball-in-hand .
An example of this is 'scratch on the break' . If 'player A' scratches on the break , 'player B' receives ball-in-hand behind the headstring .If , however , 'player B' places the ball BEYOND the headstring and shoots , 'player A' has no recourse . 'Player A' has the duty and responsibility of stopping him/her BEFORE the shot is executed .
Is it right ? Debatable .
Is it fair ? Debatable .
Is it the rule ? Definitely .

Two lessons can be learned from this :
1) keep your head in the game , and your focus on the table when playing . They'll be plenty of time for jibber-jabber after the match .*
2) situations and/or referee calls are going to go against you from time to time . Gotta learn to shake 'em off & let 'em go ! Don't worry about the last shot , focus on the next shot !:cool:




*don't know HOW MANY players I've seen not get ball-in-hand because they didn't SEE the foul since they weren't focused on the table . In APA , only the player & the captain (+ ref in tournament play , but @ nationals , it's 1 ref per 6 tables) can legally call fouls . If they aren't watching , legally the foul never occurred . :frown:
 
Re read her post. She said her opponent missed the ball. That does sound like a BIH situation.

Funny thing last night. When I'm coaching the lower ranks on my team, sometimes I will just walk over to the OB and put my finger on the table where I want them to aim. (I do move back before they shoot) But last night, I was accused of marking the table with my finger during the time out. Now, I will put up with a lot of crap, but don't accuse me of cheating! So I called the captain of the other team over, and told him that I wasn't marking the table, and if I was marking the table, it would be like this. I then licked my fingertip and put a nice little wet spot on the cloth. Then I told him if he ever saw me doing that, he could accuse me of cheating, but until then he best keep comments like that to himself.

(Yes, I've got a young big guy on my team to back up my talk. I'm just a skinny old fart!)

perhaps I misconstrued that as 'missed the shot' instead of failed to contact . I interpreted the problem as the coach remaining at the rail .

If you get over to the Tri-Cities (Kennewick, Richland and Pasco - about 2 hours from Spokane) stop by Sure Shot Billiards in Kennewick. They have three gold crowns and three eight-footers; it's all ages and open everyday from 11 a.m. to midnight. Pool is $3 an hour before 6 p.m. The owners run the place and its very comfortable and non-intimidating.
 
Ridinda9 has it right........the coach was standing right there with his finger on the rail when my opponent tried to bank his 8 ball. "Hit the 8 right here" he said. I thought he'd move away, but he didn't. He stood right there with his finger on the rail.

He missed the bank shot. I missed mine, too, and he made the 8 on the next shot. Had I gotten ball in hand for that foul, I would have won.

It's over and in the past. I'm in Tacoma for a couple days and may wander down to Malarkey's again.....or sniff about for someplace new. :cool:
 
The coach must leave the shooting area before the player shoots. So most definitely they were in the wrong.

Here's one, Bonnie. Keep an eye out for those who place their cues behind an object ball looking for a contact point to remember. If they leave a chalk mark on the cloth with their cue tip it's a rule violation.
Speaking of keeping an eye out, did I ever tell you about this girl... :)
 
thanks, Tramp. I have seen people do this and wonder.........why are they using their cue like that?

Remember that is with a "tbd" bye . Check with the TD @ 11am to make sure that that bye didn't GET FILLED . Seen more than 1 rookie take their first loss when that "to be determined" got determined and they weren't there !

That 2:00 match has the potential to become "the battle of the Bonnies" !

I do this quite a bit...not to leave a chalk mark, which I wouldn't be looking at when I get down on the shot anyway. Laying my cue on the line to the pocket helps solidify the contact point on the object ball in my mind.

Do you watch the players who place their tip down where they want the cue ball to end up the same way?

I've been using an imaginary 'dotted line' to go from the center of the pocket through the center of my OB. It's been helping me 'see'.

I was shooting well in practice today at a bar and I beat my pool buddy a few times......he's a 7 in BCA. I also beat a guy who said he wanted to learn something from good players....he played one game, I whooped him and won with 5 of his balls on the table. He said he'd be back.......he left half a beer on the table and disappeared. HUH.

I hope to keep that going for tomorrow. Of course, this IS pool, and anything can happen. I am hoping for the best, my attitude is super good, and I had Jessica put a new tip on my cue yesterday, which was a good move. I feel really good about it now.

Off to the casino. Whee!!!!

Absolutely. I've done it myself. The reason I mentioned it to Bonnie was I had remembered a fellow who had been making a small chalk mark on the cloth at the intersect point, thinking he could get away with it. He got called on it and boy was his face red. :)

Since you brought up that 'eye out' thing, and I don't think of myself as homophobic, but if it was a man keeping an 'eye out' for you instead of a girl would that make you gay? I mean, after all, an eye is an eye. :groucho:
