This seller could not resist calling this Palmer cue a Paradise, despite evidence I presented him in several different ways to the contrary. It's disheartening that this is an E-Bay power seller.

The other thing that bothers me is I tried to help out the seller by sending photos to Peter Balner to make sure my observation was accurate, which he did. I hate wasting my time on people who choose to ignore the facts in order to pump up a selling price.

This sort of thing happens all too often with old cues. This makes me sick.

Just sent him an EMAIL. Indicated I owned an identical cue which was a PALMER in the 60's. Lost it and been trying to replace it for 35yrs. It's a shame his is a PARADISE because I would pay up to $6k if his were a PALMER.:D

Asked him to keep me in mind if he ever came across one...

Nice catch! Looks like a G, second catalog.... I'll email the same and see if I get a response...

WOW!!!
All of you know your $h-t. Good catch. Great job of finding the cue when Nick was showing off the pics.

Wait a second.. isn't this the same cue that was going into a collection and would never hit balls again in a recent post?

Thanks for the info. I had been asked about the cue by Jerry R - who by the way is a super nice guy - but I am not sure if the information was originally passed along. Now it has been and the ad has been changed.

I will do a post in the cue gallery when I have time to help people ID these early cues. This one here was hand built in the Palmer shop by Eugene Balner from scratch.

Chris,
By the way, THANK YOU for recommending Jerry Rauenzahn to repair Palmer/Paradise cues. He just finished a 1965 original titlist Paradise for me that has signed paperwork from Pete Margo. Jerry does fantastic work for the price, what a deal!!! Thanks,

Kenny,

Burton didn't start using the "v" splice under the wrap until about 1990, which is how he taught Joel to do it. I guess we all thought Burton invented this technique, but it was Eugene Balner.

Palmer had a lot of demand for ebony points. The problem as weight. They had to cut the handle because the ebony was too heavy. Nobody "cored' wood in those days.

Palmer converted some old Brunswick's, 26 1/2 and whatever they could get, but unlike Titlists the supply dried up on these ebony cues. So they started making their own blanks. These early ones are primitive to the work they were able to do a few years later. They also tried Burton's blanks but the supply was - how shall we say - always "in the mail".

At the time, the V splice was not as effective as it is today because today's glues are waterproof. I can say that on all of mine with this splice the thing is as hard as a rock, but Peter Balner said that he didn't think it was a great technique, so after a year or so they went to attaching the forearm with a tenon.

Eugene Balner is a hall-of-fame cue maker. This is one of his earliest cues and he built the whole thing.

Hi John,

Thanks. I am going to e-mail you on another matter.

Chris

Hay all

The listing was stopped and relisted I see. I do not know Mike and for once was told he wanted to actually play with this one it was just to heavy. So it must still be full splice. I guess when you have a large collection you just have to play with something. I wounder what Tate plays with?
I did ask to buy the cue earlier and was told it was not for sale. That the cue was headed for "The Wall".
Nick :)

Awesome! Wish I had the ability to collect the Titlists by the masters - your Paradise and that Tad of Raist's are sure sweet. It's also good to hear you are going to use it as a playing cue. When I first got my Spain, I shot a couple of racks with it and quickly found that it was an incredible break cue. My friends cringed every time I broke with it, but, hey - it worked!

If the seller says it is what it is then I believe him, he has a great rating. Nobody likes a budinsky, and haven't you heard it's in bad taste to try and wreck a guy trying to sell something.
