Has anyone ever tried playing one pocket with the side pockets? Just curious. I think it might be an interesting game.
It would take forever! Talk about a house game. It might be interesting if played with 3 balls and you only need 2 to win.
I've played 8 ball where the the 1 and 15 are racked behind the 8 in the second to last row in the middle. Before either player can sink the 8, they have to make either the 1 (if solids) or the 15 (if stripes) in their designated side pocket. Excellent game!
Can someone tell us how the side pocket gets selected please.Alabama 8 ball! Love that game.

The week before this past Christmas I took a road trip to visit
cue maker Josh Treadway and stopped in the town of Joplin, MO.
In a pool room there the locals claim they invented the original game
of one pocket on this table:

They call it long side long pocket, and what we play today they call
short side. You will notice their table only has 2 corner pockets and
you break the balls opposite of the pockets. Makes for a long game.

In Austin messing around with a friend I had a box of Disney balls
so I made up a game called "goofy ball one hole" One guy has to
hit 7 yellow (Minnie) balls in his hole before the other guy gets his
7 red (mickey) balls in his hole and the black goofy ball is your 8th ball.
You can hit any of the balls at any time, and if the goofy ball ever goes
in before its time, it spots. it really twists ones strategy![]()

they used to have i believe 3-4 corners tables in Joplin.....it wasn't invented there. neither was one pocket. There are some corners tables in Colorado as well. Maybe a dozen in the country give or take a few. The game predates the turn of century. I use a corners break sometimes playing one hole.
