Simonis x-1

:groucho:So, this thing works better than my Kirby vacuum??

:groucho:

Questions:

If you used silicon spray on the cloth, how does this tool react when cleaning the cloth? See below. Not sure about silicon, but not recommended for teflon treated cloth. My 'guess' would be it would not work as well due to decreased friction, therefore decreased static charge. Again.. this is a guess.

If you use Chalk-Off or some other cleaner, how does this tool react when cleaning the cloth? No mention. I don't think it would matter, as long as a static charge could be created, it would work.

Does the tool cause table rolls or frayed cloth? It shouldn't. The pad that is against the cloth is also cloth.

I got on their website to see what the dimensions of the S-1 are. No info. In one picture, it looked like you could clean the table in three portions which would mean that it is about 12 to 16 inches wide. Does anyone know what the dimensions are?

thumbs down

I can't believe everyone loves this thing.

I for one am disappointed with this product. I bought it and now I feel like a sucker. I didn't think Simonis was in the business of selling products like this.

IMO this is nothing but a glorified $90 chalk eraser. It doesn't actually clean the table it just picks up some of the chalk and the rest gets pushed into the cloth.

Also the instructions don't even tell you how to use the thing and you can't read them cause there is 15 different languages. It could at least come with a DVD for $90.

I had no problem reading the instructions. And.. it does not press the chalk into the cloth. The included instructions and the one's on the web site actually tell you to press lightly. Moving it fast to build up the charge that will attract all the dirt out of the table. If you could see how much chalk and crap mine has pulled up, you'd be amazed.

But to each their own. I'm sure you could sell it to someone here if you're not happy with yours.

It's about 6X6 inch.

X-1 is way too pricey compared to Quick Clean which does the same job, if not better. (Chalk-Off is not an alternative to Quick Clean though)

I did say glued down well.If its glued down half assed it will lift.

Who installed your table?
Did you actually see them use glue?
What kind of glue was used?

On 3 piece slate, bees wax or other adherants are used for the connection of the slate pieces, but I have never heard of anyone using glue to adhere the felt to the slate.

Felt

Go to the table mechanics section. Many mechanics glue the cloth down and more are moving to the method all the time.

You should reconsider your cost-benefit analysis. The X-1 costs $90, and let's assume $10 for shipping, making it an even Benjamin. Now, a year's worth of Quick Clean is $89.91, and we'll assume shipping is in the $6-$10 range, so when you purchased a year's worth of Quick Clean, you're within a few dollars of the X-1.

The difference being, the X-1 doesn't need to be re-ordered after 12 months. You're spending $100 one time to get it shipped to your house, and you have limitless cleanings at your disposal, whereas with Quick Clean, you need to keep replenishing your stock. I don't see how there's any comparison here. Not that I'm trying to take anything away from Quick Clean, but looking at it from a purely economical standpoint, the X-1 makes more sense for the long term.

Check out this thread and many others in the talk to a mechanic section as most of the top table mechanics use the glue method, for cloth install.

X-1 is $89.95 with free shipping and $4.50 gift at Seyberts.

Yahtzee. Cheaper than a year's worth of Quick Clean or Chalk Off AND if cared for, it will last for years to come. I recently started a thread wondering about Chalk Off and Quick Clean, but when I ran the numbers, I changed my entire thought process. I will be buying an X-1 in the near future.

Its right at 6" X 6" X 2 1/2" tall. We ship them in 7" X 7" X 3" boxes.
$89.95 with free shipping and a free cue cube.

We've sold around 30 of them since January with no complaints.
They work quite well if one follows the instructions which are in English and several other languages.
Important caveat - for use on standard worsted cloth only.
NOT for use on napped or Any teflon treated cloth.

Those in the know are now using glue to install cloth on the slate (glue to edges only).
This eliminates problems trying to staple to bombed out slate liners plus it's much easier and facilitates a more consistent stretch..
3M-10 is the glue of choice and gives a better bond then 3M-77

Beeswax is not an adherant - it's only used to fill in the top gap between the slates but bondo works better.
Top mechanics will also use super glue to bond the slates together.

yes, perhaps. And I should also refresh my understanding of how X-1 works. Quick Clean basically charges the dust particles positive, and microfiber used with it is negative (or vice versa, I forgot), so you don't rub or brush the cloth with microfiber, just collect chalk and dust.

Important caveat - for use on standard worsted cloth only.
NOT for use on napped or Any teflon treated cloth.
And what's the reason, cloth doing damage to X-1 or X-1 could damage the nap or teflon? From the brands mentioned in cloth selection thread (Table Mechanics section) is there any type X-1 shouldn't be used on? I'm asking because it's hard for me to understand properly which cloth is worsted. So, 3030, Titan, Gorina, Milliken Pro?
