Sink the 8, or win on a technicality?

I won my tri-cup match this weekend. We were both on the hill and my opponent scratched on the 8-ball.

I was relieved and overjoyed to see the cue ball roll into the pocket.

Was wondering if I woulda been happier if I sunk the 8 myself for the win. And I don't think it woulda mattered, a wins a win!!

Just wondering how others felt.
 
Winning on-the-snap or by watching the other guy lose is not nearly as satisfying as pocketing the winning shot.
 
I think losing by dunking the cueball on the 8 is complete shite. Especialli if the rules permit BIH. To me the 8 ball is just like any other ball and should be treated as such. You pocket the 8 out of turn or in a different pocket that you called than that's a different story.
 
What game can you win without ever actively participating?

Bar rules 8 ball.

The rules were set in advance, you both played the same table, same balls, same rules. I think the rule of losing by scratching on the 8 is excellent. The shooter has to both hit the 8 and control the CB. Regardless, congratulations on the win. For me personally, I enjoy them any way I get them. Frankly, my joy comes more from how well I played against my ability. If I feel like I played up to my ability, made no mental errors and didn't fold under pressure, I'm pleased regardless of the outcome. I realize there are a lot of people better than me. That's true of 99.99% of the players on the planet. To play well and be depressed over losing simply doesn't make sense. Disappointed, committed to improving, even slightly frustrated I will take. Depressed, angry and bitter? No. It's a freaking game.
 
It's alway's more satisfying making the final shot, but when it comes to your team and the added pressure, it don't say ugly win or loss, it just say's win or loss.
 
I know it doesn't happen too often but I've seen the money ball missed with ball in hand. Take the win and forget it.
 
When lady luck smiles upon you make sure you appreciate the moment because as all pool players know the luck runs out eventually :-)
 
8-ball is the only game that truly has a hazard-rule and people love it or hate it often for this reason. In my opinion, I think it's great not because I like winning this way but because it's different than all the other games.
 
You won by the rules, not any techicality. If you make the 8 and scratch, it's a loss, period.

I hate that some pool games can be won entirely from the chair... though that doesn't stop me from gleefully yelling "The Chair Kid strikes again!" when someone rattles the 9 or 10 ball and concedes it.

I believe a player should have to do something... at least sink one ball, preferably more... to win. I liked the rule change in BCA where scratch on the 8 isn't a loss and the opponent has to take ball in hand and try to get out. I guess that doesn't apply here.

Still, in a pressure situation, I would also feel relief seeing my opponent dog it and hand me the win on a silver platter. That's only human. I wouldn't feel robbed of any satisfaction either because you had to win all those other games to reach hill-hill.
 
Well....I play alot of sports.

I've stood there and watched while people threw gutter balls needing 1, double faultling match point, missing 'gimmies' putts for the win.

Such is life, sometimes you have to go out and get it and sometimes it comes to you.

You have to remember the you put yourself in a position to win in the first place, no matter what. Even in pool, I've never seen anyone ever win a whole 'Match' from the chair.
 
If you are looking for an even LESS satisfying "win", how about if the guy made the 8-ball in his intended pocket legally (no scratch), but merely forgot to place his pocket marker beside the intended pocket? :grin-square:
 
not enough information. If the opponent ran the table and scratched on the 8 is different, than if you had a shot at the 8 first and missed. while a win is a win most satisfying in order for me would be:
1) break and run out
2) 8 on the break
3) opponent sinks the 8 early
4) opponent hangs the 8 (no other balls left)
5) opponent does not hit the 8 then ball in hand
5) opponent makes 8 and scratches
