SJM at the 2023 Derby City Catastrophe

Most sports have clearly defined specs -- pool not so much. I just looked at WPA and it says 4-1/2" to 4-5/8" corner pockets under their :

"Recommended Equipment Specifications"

I added the quotation marks -- but the word "recommended" is right there in the heading.

It also says, "At its sole discretion, the World Pool-Billiard Association can sanction tournaments on tables not in compliance with these specifications."
The BCA specs are even more relaxed because they cover home tables. I think pockets are OK up to 5 1/8 or so.

Once again, you fail to answer my very simple question.

I can only speak for this pool fan, but I am not particularly interested in 10 foot tables one way or another. There are none that I know of within 100 miles of me or anyone I know, so I really could care less. No pool room is gonna devote space to larger tables either...total non starter. Less tables per square foot, no way that sounds profitable. In the end, I'm only interested in a similar playing surface to what is commonly available to 99.9% of people who play pool. I bet I'm not alone in that sentiment.

I pretty much feel the same way — 10’ tables have nothing to do with me as a pool player.

And from the DCC I’d rather see some more banks and 1pocket.

actually if a place has a 10 footer and its a gambling room, that's where most of the one pocket games get played.
unfortunately they have slowly gone away so few know much about it. 10 foot tables are a thing of the past.

as 9 foot tables will be mostly in the future. 8 will rule.

tournaments not included. who knows what they will do or happen as long as they make it so the top few win most all the money all the time.

most sports that have head up play dont get to grow much for spectators. except for tennis and boxing type ones as they both have more constant action and easy to follow.

Just read a sad Facebook post by Margaret Fefilova about the Derby. I won’t put words in her mouth, but to sum it up:poor management (round of play starting at midnight, with the next at 9am), and felt equipment wasn’t up to par. Said it was her first time there, and likely last.

Sad to hear.

Margaret is a credit to our game in her demeanor and plays the game with a very high level of skill. To my knowledge, just one other lady came to the Derby after having played in the Women's World 9-Ball Championship days earlier in Atlantic City and that was Bulgarian pro Kristina Zlateva.

Both Fefilova-Styer and Zlateva played well, reaching Round 7 in the 9ball event. I've always thought that the ladies that show up to the Derby City 9-ball add a lot to the event, so if one has been scared away, that's bad news.

To host an event like the DCC, you have to consider what happens when you mix the best and less than the best skilled pool players in the world. Add to the problems that you opened the field to hugh numbers. BUT, that is what makes this the premier event in the world. If Greg Sullivan made this a 'PRO" event only than the DCC would go away as we know it. For those of you who remember the Sands Regency events in Reno, those events didn't get to be fun until it was opened and I mean a true "OPEN" format. There were fields of 350+ for many years and what happened?, the PRO'S complained and whosh.............it was gone. So let's let Greg and company figure out how to stage it such that some of these problems are lessened and we continue with this wonderful week long mecca of pool for a long time to come.

Pool is the only game that i'm aware of where the 'target/goal' size can be changed on a whim. Every other game/sport that has a goal/target has pretty defined standard for its dimensions. To accurately compare golf to pool you'd need standardized pocket sizes but variable cloth types and speeds and if you really go outside the box tables of varying degrees of levelness. Now that would really fk with the players. ;)

Very well said.

I have no doubt this has been posted before but it’s a great read and provides some insight to the whole DCC thing — and oh BTW, Carl is paying Buff $10k just for a week of a smoke free Buffalo’s in NOLA for their upcoming tournament.

Thanks for the write up SJM. I only read 2-3 pages. So I’m not sure if anyone mentioned this. It would be really helpful if the hotel had rooms for all players, and the late sign ups. I was going to sign up at the beginning of January. They had around 100 spots available, but no rooms left. That would’ve been crazy playing till 3 AM driving 20 miles back to another hotel, then coming back 20 miles at 9 AM to play.

This is also a note to anybody wanting to play next year. Book early or be ready to drive some.

I thought it was for the big tournament Mem Day weekend/week. Nothing to do with Chohan/SVB — that is at Griff’s I believe, which is already non smoking.

Interesting — right in that article the author mentions, “There aren’t even standard rules and regulations from one tournament to the next.”

I don’t care about other sports in this regard. So pick yes/no/maybe I don’t know or I don’t care. My answer was actually simple — pool does not have concrete specs. What other sport doesn’t have concrete specs?

Maybe you should care.

Can you imagine something like a dart tournament changing to a smaller board for the televised matches? Or how about a bowling tournament doing a similar switch? Or any other sport?

Whatever they use is what they use throughout an event. Oh, but pool can jack around and you don’t care, lol.

Wouldn't put much stock in one players take on the equipment. If she doesn't play again no one will miss her. Seeing how she's married to Tyler Steyer she probably will be back.

Let's just make the hole smaller for the final round of the Masters. Yeah, why the fk not. No one will bitch. ;)

Mr twister — I care about pool. Other sports not so much.

Btw, you did not answer my SIMPLE QUESTION Mr twister.

Lots of poolrooms host tournaments and not all their tables are the same throughout the room — in fact especially if they have one “feature” table. It is quite possible the specs on that feature table are in fact different than the bulk of the tables out on the main floor.
