SJM - sincere thanks for each and all of your posts/ updates. I need to get on the road now. Best Regards, Hal

After watching some of Stalev's patterns, key balls, etc tonight if I didn't know he had run over 200 yesterday I wouldn't have believed it. Weird match.

Eberle over Lackner. Max advances to Saturday's semifinals.

Stalev 190 Robles 127 safety battle in progress.

Stalev's shot selection when he's down to the key ball is often puzzling.

Stalev has a bad miss at 195, giving Robles one last chance. Tony needs about 70 more.

Damn it (forgive my language). Tony missed a breakshot into the "evil pocket" (the pocket on that particular table that I think everyone watching agrees needs a checkup from a table mechanic). Evgeny runs the needed 5 balls for the match.

I've watched a fair amount of 14.1 but being only 30 years old that makes me a jr member here in the straight pool forum. That being said I've never seen so many guys take 3 fouls intentionally before. I can't help but wonder why. Does the longer match length of 200 points have something to do with it?

Well yeah the longer the match the less 18 balls matters. You sure dont want to do it in a race to 50 when your opponent has 30.

It's a matter of knowing the score. In Tony Robles' case, he made a calculated gamble that he would put Evgeny in a bad spot, but as you saw, after the re-rack and Tony's opening break, there's not many better than Evgeny at spotting dead balls in the rack, and he fired one in.

Taking the 3-foul 18-point penalty is sometimes better than leaving an open ball by mistake, and watching your opponent race off into the stratosphere on a high run. But, it's a calculated gamble.

Thanks Stu for the updates.

I guess all the 14.1 players are going to be aghast if this Egveny gets to the finals continuing with chequered out patterns.
