SJM Final Thoughts on the 2023 US Open

4'' corners with wider side pockets.
Yeah, the side pockets are unspeakably difficult, with balls that appear to have been struck perfectly not going in.

Buddy Hall always taught that you should shoot every ball into a corner pockets except for balls leaning over the side pocket. His way may become in vogue again the way things are progressing.

I have mixed feelings about the 4 inch pockets.
I played scratch golf by the time I was 17…..but not on a PGA course….I doubt I could’ve broke 80 on them.
I got no problem with our top tournaments being played on 4 inch pockets…but keep them out of the rooms.

I know where you are coming from, but this equipment led, based on At Large's stats, to only 21% B&R and the breaker winning just 54% of the racks. The equipment, combined with the already tough breaking rule, have seemed to trivialize the break.

Even if you are good with such conditions as a player, do you think it serves the marketability of pro pool?

Personally, I’d like 4.5 templates for the corner pockets made for all pool games…like snooker has for their game.
…and let a player get applauded for running packs once in a while.
Canada, in the 80s, was a snooker nation….we had three Canucks in the top 8 in the world rankings…and maybe 100 players who had
a chance at world class. We had a popular weekly tournament in Toronto with entries in the 70 to 90 range…played on Anniversaries.
The pockets were 3.5 (world regulation) but the fall was more liberal. As our awareness of world conditions grew, players started to complain
about our pockets being ‘buckets’….so more British style tables started to appear….funny thing, a lot of our complainers took up 9-ball.….
…..so I’m not keen on seeing the game go to tight pockets, I think it’ll hurt the game immensely.

unfortunately for all sports the lesser recreational players tend to follow the lead of the top players. pool included.

look how many posts we get asking what shaft or tip efren uses or svb.
if they play on 4 inch pockets then the rec. players want to play on the same field.

Some truth here, but amateur baseball players play in smaller ballparks with shorter fences. Amateur football players know the specs of an NFL field, but they play on smaller fields. Amateur golfers play on courses that are much shorter than the courses pros play on. In pool, many play on smaller tables than those in use in pro competition.

It's not easy to generalize here, but there's no doubt that some amateurs are just as you suggest.

they also in all sports that dont have a real full choice have to take what is given.
but in many or even most pool rooms the pockets have gotten tighter. that has to be from suggestions from their better rec. players.

home tables i am sure have tighter pockets than the past.

and even playing golf i see the guys play from the back tees often and they cant break 90.

in pool the recs. have changed over the years with equipment they can control.
the 58 inch cue. and some even go to a 60.
carbon shafts. multiple cues. extensions. the new racks.

overall they get to choose the minor things and yearn for what they see on tv from the pros.

running packages is fine for an enthusiast to watch.
however it hurts the match as it may not be close. nothing is more exciting to watch than a match that goes back and forth.
hard to control that. and it seems the break and the special racks have made stringing racks together too easy.
along with the fast cloth.
but face it. the promoters are going to decide what we see and how we see it, until the players have some real choice or a way to force them to accommodate their best interests as well as those promoting..

"Forcing" promoters to do what the players want, eh? Yeah.. Because players have done SUCH a good job in recent decades of promoting the game, eh? Players think the best way to "grow" the game is "Pay me more, biatches!" Most players don't have even the smallest clue as to how to promote the game. As evidenced by the recent Varner/Parica travesty marathon finals match that saw them playing the One Pocket wedge for HOURS a game. Players only care about titles and what money they can win right now. They even do ish that damages the game, to achieve either one of those goals.

Those Monday night tournaments were awesome! I really enjoyed playing on the British style tables with the tight pockets and steel block rails when they came out. It was a challenge at first but once I got used to them it seemed like I was playing on buckets.

Well said, Russ. As you suggest, event producers should not be guided by the players in this matter. The job of an event producer is to keep abreast of what the players want, keep abreast of what the fans want, and then make a decision that maximizes the marketability of the professional pool product.

I loved those Anniversaries at Le Spot and the old Olympia downtown.
Tight tables never scared me…..won more money south of the border on snooker pockets that make world regulation look
like buckets. What bothered me in Britain was heavy cloth. Players on this continent that mourn the days of thick cloth
make me shake my head…they don’t seem to know what they’re missing.

There was never a dull moment at Le Spot with all the characters that hung around there .

Not sure I agree. All football fields are the same size no matter who is playing. I can golf from any tees I want including the pro tips. Baseball fields are all pretty much the same but the equipment may be a little different (Aluminum not wood bats).

On the golf courses I used to play, the tips were only 6,500 yards, with the middle tees being about 6,200. Neither is pro length. The home run distances increase as you go higher and higher in the baseball hierarchy. High schools, colleges, minor leagues and major leagues don't all play on the same size field.

Yes, football fields are of more uniform length, but pickup games are usually played on a smaller field.

Right field in Yankee stadium is smaller than most highschool and college fields so again I disagree. Also where I golf pro tournaments are played there (7200-7500) and while I don't I can play where the pros do.
