Smoking • U.S. Open 9 Ball Champion

I never saw one either but I was thinking there might be some up around Shreveport. Nope. According to a gum'mint survey, there is no tobacco farm in Louisiana. Here are the top tobacco producing states by acreage:

Ranked By Total Tobacco Acreage
1. North Carolina 170,083
2. Kentucky 87,641
3. Virginia 20,881
4. Tennessee 20,109
5. South Carolina 20,084
6. Georgia 17,989
7. Pennsylvania 7,886
8. Ohio 3,499
9. Connecticut 3,128
10. Indiana 2,174

Not all of them are in the South, I notice. Nearly all the acreage is in the top two. Who would have guessed that you could get a fine New Haven seegar?

Bob:

Curious, but didn't you see post #33? Why is there this fixation with "possible tobacco farms in Louisiana"? Never said as such, and I'm scratching my head why this keeps coming up.

And sure, why wouldn't there be one in the northeast somewhere? "Most" doesn't mean "exclusively."

Hey hon! I think this was just pure curiousity as to where they actually were. I don't think anyone is fixated on anything. Just my opinion. :)

Thanks Amanda. I just thought it was odd that it came up a second time, when in post 33, I tried to quell the "issue."

Interesting demographic data relayed by Bob, though.

Ray, aka "BigTruck" was gracious to just post the hot seat match at White Diamond between James Davis and Shane. What a great match, btw.

Watch the clouds of smoke at 50:25, 52:00, and 53:28.

What I think may be lost on some, is this:

Shouldn't we all have the right to pursue our love of pool without having to risk our health to do so?

If someone wants to smoke, that's certainly their right and it's just fine with me. But, please, don't make me smoke with you.

Seriously, take a look at the times I listed above on this link. As Ray would say, 'brutal, just brutal'.

I was going to post the same thing. Waves of smoke wafting in front of the camera and did you notice the two guys puffing away on and near the front row. When the players shot on the far end end of the table they were literally a few feet from these guys blowing smoke.

He had a cig going all the time non stop during our match. He knew how much I hated it.
It's just so rude and crude.

.

In one tournament in the remote past, Jimmy Reid ( Mr. Giggles ) tried to pull that trick on CJ.Wiley. CJ told hom to take his ............. jimmy did not have choice but to oblige CJ's ultimatum.

Bob: ... Why is there this fixation ...
OCD.

Actually, I was just curious about tobacco farming in Louisiana having lived there and traveled through parts of it many times. And I thought it was strange that CT would have tobacco farms.

But why do you have a fixation with my fixations? Don't you have better targets for your OCD?:grinning-moose:

:D Thanks for the laugh. Yeah, CT is an interesting bird. There's Hartford, which is both the "insurance company HQ" capital of the world, as well as having Colt Firearms headquartered there. (Interesting paradox, when you think about it.) Then you have East Windsor, CT, where Ahlstrom and other paper product companies are headquartered. Other cities in CT also have a common "industry headquartering" theme. I wasn't surprised, btw, that there are tobacco farms in CT -- would be interested in knowing if they really are in New Haven or not.

I think when you break things down like this -- using supporting demographic data -- you get some very interesting results! Thanks for passing that on.

The tobacco farms are in the CT Valley Area predominantly and some can be seen in Windsor on the highway that takes you in to Bradley International Airport.

Word is that the CT Vally tobacco is highly sought after and is, as another az'er mentioned, used primarily as the cigar wrap. Some fine cigar makers use it.

Interesting! One other "industry HQ"-motif city is Norwalk, which appears to be the telemarketing capital; i.e. many of the companies do the "as seen on TV" Ron Popeil style marketing ads are based there.

Getting back on topic, when you see clouds of smoke visibly wafting in front of a camera, you know it's bad. Either that, or the air filtration system gave out. Can you imagine what that camera equipment smelled like after BigTruck took it down when the tourney was over? Not somewhere I'd want to be!

Well, I'm glad you posted. I wasn't sure if Teddy's opinion was most of the listeners or not. Perhaps Teddy just has a different perspective and we're all entitled to our own.

I'm not worried about every little thing I saw and do while doing commentary but my goal is to make the pool matches enjoyable and vary the content from time to time.

Teddy's comment did give me some pause after I wrote my first response. I make every attempt to never shark any player regardless of who they are, by the use of my voice or the motion of my body, especially while in the booth. It would hurt me greatly if any player heard my commentary and thought that I might be intentionally disrespecting them or intentionally or unintentionally trying to shark them.

There seemed to be a lot of people in the Chat room but I was unable to read many of the posts due to the match coverage and "interviewing" I was doing during downtime and such.

Thanks again for posting. You too Teddy. It's great to hear other people's perspective even if they differ from mine.

I never said you sharked anyone, Joey, I said you made the experience of watching and rooting for James almost impossible.. My roommate left, went to bed and specifically told me to talk smack to you, he was so flustered, then my friend Josh texted me and complained about you, and then I come to find out, from James himself, that his family (brothers/sisters, mom) was watching, and you upset them, too.. Once again, the idea is to be objective if you are calling the action, which probably means leave the betting to others, but if you cannot bring yourself to do that, try not to gloat and act like the smartest guy in the room for getting a breakfast bet down on SVB!.. smh!..

And to the person you responded to, fiddlesticks with that "he's making history every time he plays," BS... The opponent deserves the same respect as SVB, PERIOD!..

My rights stop where yours start.

Remember My rights stop where your start.
I am not a smoker, but come on people...
My parents were both smokers... I am not... But where does this stuff stop?
2 examples...
We have a law that you have to wear a seat belt? Why?
We have a law that you cant buy a certain size soda now? Who made you my mother? With the new health care laws they will be able to control your habits even more. High Blood pressure? Overweight?
We have laws to stop or curb way to much...
When they first started banning smoking smokers were a larger segment of the customers. So when bars and other places were forced to be "No Smoking" and then when those placed wanted to cater to smokers and wanted to open aa a smokers place they were then told no. Why?

Lets ban Drinking you know it not good to drink in front of the kids and after shooting pool you may of had one to many ..
Lets ban fried foods, salt, sugar it is bad for your heart you know..( these are on the law books by the way)
If you want to ban something ban all the chemicals the US Gov and tobacco companies put in smokes to make them burn this way or smell that way. You know Smoke natural tobacco not this man made trash.

According to a new study Smokers are on the rise again because the next generation have more money to waste so now your 18 year old who leaves with you and doesnt have the bills you do can afford it.

Let the owner of the building make the choice to pull inthe customers he wants. if he wants to add more filters and fans that is even better..

Now Smokers for years I have heard you laugh at people when you blew smoke, not dump ashes and toss your butts on the floor, even thought the ash tray was next to you. You know leave your mess for us non smokers to clean up. You made this problem for yourselves. Just because I support your rights to smoke doesnt mean Im on your side to not be polite to us non smokers.
I am actually standing up for less GOV laws to control me and what i do..

Sorry for the rant but i fig. this is what this topic line is really about.

Professional Billiards in the US will never be taken seriously as a sport until the players start acting like athletes.

Name one other professional sporting event where you can smoke will competing?

I guess you missed the point about the sharking. I never suggested that you said I sharked anyone, Teddy.

Regardless, I think I may understand what you're saying. If I am able to watch the video again through the Premium Membership archives on poolactiontv.com and listen to the commentary, I will let you know what I think. (BigTruck is so on top of his game and I seldom beat him at anything so I can't make any promises about gloating over a win against him.)

But if I listen to the commentary and if it seems like I was dissing James, I will send him a PM and get his phone number for a one-on-one apology.

Thanks for listening to the broadcast. I'll continue to try and improve my commentary as time goes on but I can't make any promises for the future except that I will always try hard to provide quality commentary, to entertain as best I can and inform the listeners about what's happening, what's going to happen and what has happened; to the best of my ability, all in appreciation for their listening.

This would be my feelings even if I didn't smoke. I know many would like to see guns illegal to citizens also. Most likely many who would want to see more smoking laws.

Shane Van Boening came to Louisiana to play in the fabled White Diamonds, "BIG CALCUTTA" weekend bar table tournament and in spite of getting knocked to the one loss side, managed to come back strong through the one loss side, to win by double-dipping the same guy who knocked Shane to the other side. James Davis, Jr. had a GREAT TOURNAMENT playing some of the best pool I have ever seen him play.

Shane did not know about the smoking at this tournament event and it was quite apparent that he didn't enjoy the smoke.

While doing some commentary with me, the subject of smoking at the tournament somehow came up. As I recall, Shane just mentioned it without any prompting by me. I'm glad to see Shane setting an example for other pool players by great work ethic, attitude etc. His stand on no drugs and no smoking, coupled with a healthy lifestyle which includes hitting the gym on a regular basis allows for him to be a great role model for all pool players and other athletes.

Shane said that he would not be returning to this event if smoking is allowed inside of the building. He also does not attend other tournaments where smoking is allowed in the event area.

I hope that tournament promoters and pool room owners will take notice of Shane's stand and I thank him for standing up for what's right and intelligent.

Since this event I have talked to MANY SMOKERS (who play pool locally as well as nationally) who agree that if smoking were not allowed inside of the building where the tournament is held, it would be better for all concerned.

People with contacts suffer from the smoke in the air as well as those who are sensitive to the smoke, like Gene Albrecht. Hell, I've got COPD from smoking and I don't like the smoke one bit but I've kind of been silent for the most part because I did that to myself with years of heavy smoking and I didn't feel like I had the right to tell others to do what I had been unable to do for so many years. I'm lucky that I quit smoking so long ago as I am not in as bad a shape as some with COPD.

I'm wondering if the following information is correct and if it is correct then what in the hell are these few states waiting for?

A smoking ban (either state or local) has been enacted covering all bars and restaurants in each of the 60 most populated cities in the United States except these 16: Arlington, Texas, Atlanta, Fort Worth, Jacksonville, Memphis, Miami, Las Vegas, Nashville, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Tampa, Tulsa, and Virginia Beach.

These cities and states have been holding out for too long. The majority of the cities and states have taken a stand against smoking in public places and I think it is time for these holdouts to do the same.

It's really sad if you think about it. Forget about the health risks that smoking promotes. Recently a poster posted a link about the IMMEDIATE REDUCTION IN LUNG PERFORMANCE from SECOND HAND SMOKE by the University of Athens if I am not mistaken. The evidence is here and there's no arguing about it. But forget all of that. If you're not going to think about the health problems from smoking or being around second hand smoke, at least think about the stink and irritation that smoking causes.

I have to use eye drops in my eyes at every tournament in Louisiana and sometimes multiple times per night just to keep my eyes from being irritated.

Anyway, this isn't a personal whine but the fact that a WORLD CHAMPION like Shane stepping up and taking a stand makes me feel a lot better about the future of pool and the people playing the game.

Hopefully, other important public pool figures, including the pool room owners, promoters etc will take a stand like Shane and maybe in the future we will have smoke free pool tournaments.

I hope this day of smoking abstinence in public places comes real soon. I see a lot of people who don't want to come into pool rooms because of the smoke.

This not smoking issue isn't about power or taking away someone's right to smoke. It's about giving all of us a break from the smoke, especially in the public places, like bars, restaurants and other public buildings.

I mean, how hard is it to take yourself outside between matches and light them up outside? Actually, I see MANY PLAYERS who smoke going outside to smoke. Apparently even they don't like the smoke inside of the tournament area.

I've had my say and so has Shane Van Boening, WORLD CHAMPION.

Let's hear what you have to say.

Keep it civil and let us know how you feel.

Very good posting.

First: i am a strong smoker-- but i grown up with a very handicapped person in my house (lungs)- so i cannot understand how some ppl don t respect other humans health.

It s unbelievable for me, that in a poolroom smoking is allowed. Just at this moment i have a very nice student who s close to quit playing pool because of this problem. The only pool room where he s able to play pool is full with smokers-and the owner does nothing.

Sad but true.

Pool rooms should be smoke-free, and this 100%.

from a strong smoker :)

Golf (unfortunately)

Yes, I'm surprised but true... and two points about that...

It is outside so the other Golfers are not really effected. If smoking had no effect on other people then there would be no debate but it does, it's not a singular act when you are in a confined space.

Also, like pool, Golf does not get a lot of respect as a true sport... from a quick google search, perhaps this is one of the reasons. I found several forum debates on this same subject in the Golf world.
