Smokers' rights...non-smokers rights...
What about the business owners' rights to make decisions based upon what they deem is best for their business? If he wants to sit around and go broke with the smokers, instead of tapping into this goldmine of the silent majority of pool players who detest smoke, he is paying his dues (in the form of taxes) and should be allowed to do as he sees fit.
Playing pool, or smoking for that matter, is NOT addressed by the Bill of Rights. Pool Halls are private business establishments. If you feel that your town is crying out for a non-smoking room I would recommend that you open one as quickly as possible. Sounds like you could pick up some tables from the business in question at the beginning of this thread.
The point is, is that the pool hall allowing billows of smoke to cascade around his establishment is leaving money "on the table", so to speak, regarding non smokers.
And if a new pool hall starts up that does not allow smoking, he will not gain the business of the smokers from the other business. It's tough to fade not being able to draw the business from the smokers, I acknowledge that.
But here's where it gets interesting. If a statewide ban goes into effect, and the old pool hall in this town keeps on offering substandard service, facilities, because he is the only pool hall in town.. THEN, that opens a huge opprtunity for a new pool hall to open up. He offers friendly staff, clean facilities, etc.. Then, the old pool room goes out of business because he did not listen to his customers.
As it stands, current smoking pool halls without sufficient air filtration rule the roost. The barriers to entry are that a non smoking pool hall will not make money IF, and ONLY IF there is a smoking alternative.
The truth of it is, non smoking businesses are more healthy for everyone, all around. Just like a Chinese restaraunt that does not use MSG is more healthy all around. The government CAN and eventually WILL ban indoor smoking in businesses. And it will end up helping the shortsighted businessman of today who refused to get proper filtration.
And oh, what a blessed day that will be. If Florida does it soon enough, I can put a pool hall out of business in my home town. His place stinks to high heaven of smoke. He won't be able to clean it fast enough to matter, and I will steal all his customers, since my staff will be trained a HECK of a lot better than his are.
