Smoking Cigarettes at Expos

I'll just throw my two cents in.
If pool room owners really cared about this, and cared about their customers.
They would install (i.e. pony up the money) air filtration systems.
With a good one, you can have dozens of people smoking in one area, and no "death cloud".

It's a simple answer.
Smokers can smoke, non-smokers don't have to.

Thanks,

Jon~*~Smoker

If they had done that years ago and maintained the filtration system over time I suspect smoking bans would never have got off the ground. In the few areas they were required by law inadequate systems were put in the first place, not turned on when inspectors weren't around to save electricity, and ill maintained.
I put up with the smoke for years, smokers didn't have any sympathy for me (rightfully so), and now that they have to go outside to smoke I have no sympathy for them (rightfully so).

You know, it may not have been Allen's decision to go smokeless. It could be the Convention Center's requirements. Insurance purposes, that kind of thing.

Barbara...Whether it is Allen's decision, or the Convention Center's, I'm all for it! :D It will make an amazing difference, imo...and I doubt that the numbers of players and/or visitors will go down. It will certainly be interesting to see...

Well, while we're on the subject of smoking...I've been quit for 11 days now. Last night was the real test. I played pool for the first time since I've quit. There *was* nothing better than smoking while playing pool...they went hand in hand to me.

I could sit back and watch a match, with a drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other. But, I found myself actually practicing with a little more intensity - partly due to anger because I wanted to smoke - and partly because I didn't have that cigarette "crutch" that perhaps in some ways made me lazy..because it would be real easy to take too many periodic breaks to smoke and look around or chat with someone. I wasn't playing quite as good as I do..but I figure in a few months the full adjustment to non-smoking pool playing will be made and it won't even be something that crosses my mind. Of course I could be wrong.

Maybe I should try gum...

I realize ....

quiet frankly that I am in the minority as far as this thread
goes, but I smoke and I enjoy it, and I have NO intentions
of quitting. The filtration systems are a must to be fair to
everyone, but lots of times I find non-smokers in Pool rooms
that become bored just sitting there, and they pick up other
rather annoying habits, like trying to be cute all the time,
or going overboard trying to be a comedian, or they start
playing with salt and pepper shakers, or straws and napkins,
or talking loudly about someone in their life. I try to be considerate
around non-smokers, but I absolutely refuse to let them take
away my right to smoke. I did 3 tours in Nam for my country,
and free choice is what this country is about. To be candid,
my 83 year old mother says getting old isn't the golden years,
it is the sh***, and I don't really don't have any big desire to
live past the time when my johnson can't get hard anymore.

I absolutely despise the smell of cigarettes...but I have been in poolhalls where good air filtration was in place and I wasn't bothered by the stench to the point I wouldn't frequent the place. My local poolhall went out of business because of smoking...The stench was so bad in that place that the wrap of my cue smelled like shit...The only people that were in there were chainsmoking teenagers that spent no money and drove away those that did...I went up to the person that ran the place and laughed in his face when the place did close...
I'm usually not one to say anything to anyone about how they should do things, but I told this guy to get the brats out and the money in, but he was just a stupid gimp donkey....LOLz

About smoking in an expo or trade show, I think it's very unprofessional to have ever been allowed....

Here in Maryland we have 3 counties that have banned smoking in all (non-private) bars and restaurants, with a good chance of the ban becoming statewide within a year. So of course it’s going to have an impact on the pool community. Some players seem to have a cigarette or cigar hanging from their lip all night long. So it’ll be interesting to see how it affects the leagues in my area. The ban for my county begins January 1, the same week APA restarts.

During some of the conservation with league members, we have players here that have said, "F#CK That"! And because of the smoking ban, that they are going to quit the league.

And I told them, that not only are they being unfair, but very selfish. I remind them of all us the non-smoking league members (and there are quite a few of us), who have compromised our health (for years), because of our love of the game, commitment to our teams, and for the friendships we've established. We hated the smoke, but we love the game more, and disregarded our health because of it. So why can't these smokers be willing to make a similar sacrifice or compromise for us?

Also I just found out that New Jersey is currently considering banning smoking statewide in all (non-private) bars and restaurants: http://www.smokefree.net/NJ/

As I stated earlier there will be 3 counties in Maryland with complete smoking bans in all (non-private) bars and restaurants as of January 1, 2005, with a statewide ban being considered within a year thereafter. And Washington DC (the nations capitol), is considering a city wide ban in 2007. In November, Washington State voted overwhelmingly for Clean Indoor Air, which makes Washington the 10th smokefree workplace state; Law takes effect in December.

Currently there are ten states that have banned smoking statewide:

California
Delaware
New York
Connecticut
Maine
Massachusetts
Rhode Island
Montana
Vermont
Washington (state)

The following countries have banned smoking country wide:

Scotland
England
Ireland
Italy
Uganda
India
Sweden
Norway
New Zealand

And the following Canadian provinces/territories have gone smokefree (with implementation dates):

Northwest Territories (May 1, 2004)
Nunavut Territory (May 1, 2004)
New Brunswick (Oct. 1, 2004)
Manitoba (Oct. 1, 2004)
Saskatchewan (Jan. 1, 2005)
Newfoundland and Labrador (July 1, 2005)
Ontario (May 31, 2006)
Quebec (May 31, 2006)
Nova Scotia (Dec. 1, 2006)

I think most smokers better get use to the idea of playing pool in a healthier environment.
