Smoking rooms with Non-Smoking areas?

There are a few tolerable places that we have ventured to that do have separate venues for smoking and non smoking patrons, unfortunately even some of those hold their tournaments in the smoking section, and some are too smokey even when they try to cater to both.

Even if a room is predominantly smoking in the later part of the night, why would you ever host a big tournament and expect to attract a full field of participants?

I think if your not going to designate a non smoking area of a pool room you should at least temporarily ban smoking during a major all weekend tournament.

Having a smoking area is like having a peeing area of a swimming pool . Just don't work for some .

So True.

When you have a smoking area that is connected (without a duel walling clean room buffer zone) to the non smoking area, you have a smoking area for the entire room.

I used to go to a diner that had 2 boths for smoking, the rest of us were just able to second hand smoke.

So either have it be smoking or non smoking period. And let the market decide what is more profitable for you...

What state or country are you talking about? It's been years since I've been to a pool room that state law even permits smoking at all.

I do most of my playing in Clarksville Tn. It is non smoking in businesses unless you have an age restiction. So if you have must be 21 to enter on the door smoking is allowed. A lot of cities have adopted this type of law. I wish it wasn't this way. There are three main rooms/bars in this city. No way one of them is going to say ours is non smoking. That room would be closed down within a couple of months.

We don't have the luxury of staying in 1 area for too long. Since we travel often to many different cities and states we notice many places that smoking unfortunately is still allowed in bars and poolrooms and some of them lack a non-smoking section or are poorly divided.

What really bothers me is some of the big giant tournaments we have to skip altogether because they are in a smoking establishment. Even worse there are places that have both a smoking and non smoking section separated and then still hold their tournaments in the smoking section.

Jamaica joe;s tournament just had 128 participants and a waiting list. it's a smokiong pool room.

I know that, which sucks because I would love to get in some of their tournaments, as well as McGoos, Shooters in Olathe, Michael's in Fairfield OH, ANY pool room in Florida, Shore Thing in Myrtle Beach, ANY pool room in WV or SC or GA or LA but alas all smoking and Gene wont go.

Don't worry, Rhea. It's just a matter of time until smoking will no longer be associated with pocket billiards. Then pool rooms will "redefine" their rooms once again.

Just give it another generation or two, but it WILL happen. I can't wait.

I wish Pennsylvania would adopt the no smoking laws. I believe every bordering state to us has this law.

When I go to league some nights and walk into the bar or club it is like walking into a burning building there is so much smoke.

Ultimately if PA doesn't go smoke free soon I may be forced to quite playing pool other than at home.

look at all the aging pool players dying off before their time and the sick ones. its because most smoked and hung out in the smoky rooms all their lives. why should the new generation follow suit.

move to a state where you can live and be healthy without giving up what you want to do because the tobacco companies buy off the politicians.

So all the older pool players are dieing from smoke related illnesses ? I had no idea.

I think maha's statement about all the older pool players dying because they smoked is quite the hyperbole.

It is sad though, to see players like Efren "Bata" Reyes no longer playing on account of a few ailments—and most likely a few other reasons too.
Heck, he's only in his 60s. By the way, he smoked.

"The pool player of tomorrow will focus on nutrition and physical fitness.
He/she will demand a healthy environment in which to play;
one that is devoid of smoke, excessive noise, and other extremes...

He/she will be more educated and will understand the pool industry much better than his/her great pool-playing ancestors.
The pool player of tomorrow, if he/she so chooses, will continue to play at his or her high level well into four scores of age."

Maybe they ought to have smoking tournaments where you have to smoke a certain amount of cigarettes per hour or forfeit your match. There could be a handicap system according to whether you smoke with or without a filter for instance. Just think how great it would be all that wonderful smoke and how great your clothes would smell it sounds fantastic to me! The best part is no non smokers allowed, ban those muthas!!
