Sneaky Petes

Perhaps I should have reworded that. I meant an equipment conscious good player, as in a player who is skilled, but also is a stickler for a solid hitting cue. And all of my comments concerning these things was in response to the question of whether it even matters if you bring in a high quality non-sneaky or not, as just about anyone brings their own cue.

But you guys are right about watching a person's speed. The reason I started this thread though was because of my disappointment at what is considered "sneaky" these days.

Anything you carry in with you isn't sneaky. :D

Sneakies anymore . . .

are just plain fancy . . . but I like 'em!

I recently bought a Players Sneakey Pete for $45 new and could not be happier, cheap cue straight as an arrow and hits good....

Yes, but their cues will usually have:
Decals
Stickers
Plastic Inlays
Rounded CNC points

And are not great playing cues. If a good player brings his cue, it will probably have:

Highly Figured Wood
Razor Sharp Points
Killer Ringwork
Hoppe Rings

Believe me, I haven't been playing all that long and am far from being a cue expert and I can tell the difference between a cheaply made cue and a quality cue pretty easily because of these kinds of glaring differences.

ALL THE "MONSTER PLAYERS" I KNOW, COULD PLAY WITH A BROOM STICK........ AND MOST OF THESE GUYS PLAY WITH CUES UNDER 100 DOLLARS, AND I PLAY WITH A FANCY CUSTOM CUE. DOESN'T MEAN THAT I WOULD CONSIDER GAMBLING WITH THEM.

What does common sense have to do with this? This is AZ billiards and common sense has no place here.:D
Hope all is well Marcus

One of the things I see at bars when someone has a plain looking hustlers cue or sneaky that looks like a house cue is they keep it looking like it's brand new. All the regulars in the joint know that there isn't a new looking house cue in the joint.

I use to use a hustlers cue to hustle in bars. With all the info in the last ten years it became a joke to try and fool people with it. Instead I carry around a half dozen slip-on tips in my pocket of various sizes that I have already shaped at home. I just turn my back and slip one on or take the house cue I'm using to the mens room and slip it on. If someone says something I just say I found the slip-on on the floor and figured I'd try it.;) Johnnyt

I had a Tim Scruggs not so sneaky pete. I really really really regret selling it. Best playing cue I have ever hit with. Need the money at the time. Now am playing with a Dufferin and a Schmelke. But I can play just as bad with my cheap cues as I did with my Scruggs. :)

:scratchhead: I've always believed that the whole point of a sneaky pete was a high quality cue with superior construction that looked exactly like a bar cue. I've always thought that they were made that way so you could have a superior cue in a bar and people would think you were playing with a bar cue, making it easier to hustle.

With all these sneaky petes going around with hoppe rings, ivory joints, fancy veneers and ivory buttcaps, etc, I'm starting to get really confused. There's no way someone can't tell that you brought your own high quality cue to play with if you have one of those! :scratchhead:

LOL, the infamous "liberace petes." Yes, I agree it defeats the purpose.

As it has been said before....the days of hustlin' with a sneaky pete are all but gone. There are too many people playing with their own cues now for that tactic to really be effective. And any one who nows even an iota about cues, will spot even the sneakiest of petes. They will likely be well taken care of, but will still likely have that tell-tale ring of blue chalk that tends to collect in the wood at the joint.

If ya wanna look like a hustler....play with one off the wall.

Lisa

BTW...here's a thought! Could it be that many of us who choose to play with fancy petes do so because we happen to like how a wrapless full spliced cue plays?!!!

Naw...it couldn't possibly be that simple.

Yesterday's hustler used a superior cue disguised as a house cue and just said he was getting lucky, with today's evolution of the cue, and everyone having a "decent" cue, the hustler today disguises talent with no more than a 4 ball run and a well placed cue ball on the missed object ball!!!!!!!! :)
