Snooker shot - was this a fluke?

Was this a fluke or did he really try to do this? I would think he would have tried kicking 2 rails, but he was cueing parallel to the end rail, and looks like he is almost shooting in the wrong direction, with no english, with a very soft stroke and then he almost scratches.

Do you think this was the shot he was intending or do you think he was trying the 2/3 rail kick?

At first I thought it was a fluke.

I have been playing some snooker myself, I know how those pockets reacts, and it IS possible that he actually was trying to do that. It is a very creative shot, and after watching it a couple of times I am pretty sure he tried to do that.

Especially since the ref was putting the shot up once again, it means that he had already tried to hit the green atleast once. After failing once, he will adjust the speed and english, and normally hit on the second or third try. Since he shot it like he did, and it was not his first attempt, I believe he tried to do that.

definitely intentional - the pockets react like that relatively consistently. he went for it.

Agreed. I don't know the first thing about playing snooker, but I used to practice a bunch on a snooker table. That's the way those corner pockets react to a close to the rail shot.

Those corner pockets are really tight & are great for practicing cut shots.

Yes

Growing up with a snooker table, he planned that shot. It was a very creative and gutsy. And the pockets generally allow that type of shot.

Thanks for the post - nice video.

shot was planned and he nails it 70-80% of the time imo

Alcano's shot was much tougher, fantastic attempt

I've seen that shot a bunch of times if you take the kick out of it. we play alot of golf on the snooker table, and that shot comes up more than you think where there is a couple of balls in the way and someone shoots in the pocket, to double out and make a legal hit.

Just from the rules of snooker, it's certain that he was trying the shot. On such a kick shot, if the player fails to hit the ball on, the opponent can require the balls to be put back and have the player shoot again, with a 4-point penalty per failure. You can be absolutely certain that the player was trying to hit the ball, and at that speed, there is only one way he could hit the ball.

Another aspect of snooker seen in the shot and also in the great link Scaramouche just posted, is that often safeties are played by leaving the cue ball very close to the ball on (the ball required to be struck). The practice at nine ball is nearly always to play the safety hit at a speed that drives the object ball a long distance. I've seen Karen Corr use the "softly onto the ball" safe at nine ball and I was really surprised.

I think he tried to do that. The ball traveling at that angle towards the corner pocket has a low chance of scratching because of the curvature of the pocket.
