Snow Days

Any of you posters ever get a day off from your job because of snow and/or ice in the winter? i love those, i can play/practice pool all day. we almost had one today, but not quite. they were forecasting ice and then about 5 inches of snow. the Naval Base where i work would probably have closed, giving all of us Administrative Leave vice us having to burn our own personal leave.

However, we got little if any snow, and about 1/4 inch of ice, just enough to make things slippery. i woke up about 6 a.m. this morning, hoping to see snow and ice everywhere and also hear on the radio the Naval Base was closed for the day. no such luck, but then again, its early in the winter.

that happened tonight to me kinda sorta , Im in Germany. I went to the pool room club, a private deal(it was GREAT) and when we walked outside there was 2-3" of new snow on the car, 2" i think. Everyone was laughing at me-because I had on Chucks low-tops and no socks and a thin tee shirt and sweat pants. I told them I dont even own cloths like you all have on, its 20degrees C at my house in LA and I never go anywhere cold. I did look pretty stupid I suppose, but I didnt get cold. Great guys, Great club-thanks Dirk.:smile::smile:

The problem with getting the day off as a snow day is that you end up shoveling snow all day.

The good part is you are not at work.:yeah:

On the other hand I think being at work is easier, but then again if you didn't get the day off and it snowed the snow would still have to be shoveled.

Years ago in the early 70's we got dumped with about 15" of snow. One of the guys that we shared riding into work with called me up and said that he would pick me up to go to work. We were both on maintenance and he just became a supervisor. I told him that they was a snow emergency and they wanted everyone off the roads. He said he was going in and I would be in trouble if I didn't go with him. We drove the 19 miles and got there a little late. Hardly anyone showed up. I got docked for the late time. The company (GM) decided to give everyone a snow day with pay. I worked my butt off all day and lost money for the docked time while everyone else stayed at home and got full pay.

I work for Fedex. Monday NW Indiana was hit with drifting snow. We went to work, loaded our trucks, and went home. About 3 hours work. Sweet!

(Paid dearly for it on Tuesday.)

oddly , we get very few of these 'snow days' you speak of here in Florida .
However , we sometimes get 'hurricane evacuation weeks' where we get to go live in hotels 1,000 miles away . They're great fun , except for the whole "will my home be totally demolished?" question lingering in the back of your mind . . . .

one of the main reasons I moved back up north! nothing like watching a hurricane form, stressing over it for a week or so on the weather station, and seeing it destroy the islands near Cuba, and you can do nothing but board up your house!:sorry: at least you get to go surfing on the SWEET WAVES before they hammer the coast into saw dust!!!

as far as snow days go?......I just walk down the basement steps and pick up my cue....well, I do that every day

It has to be a Nor'Easter of full purportion in order for me to get "weathered out" of work. Thats what happens when you're the manager. "Send everyone else home, you're on salary." Even though I have to drive further than almost all of my employees...

So answer me this, DCP... I see in your profile that your location is in Indiana. We have Navy bases in Indiana? Really? On the Great Lakes, perhaps?

Yes, check the Atlas, you can see it just a little southwest of Bloomington, IN. Its called Crane, and its actually a Naval Surface Warfare Center. Mostly engineering, logistics, fleet support, that type of thing. Nearly 3,000 govt and over 1,000 contractors are employed here.

Just kinda makes you wonder, when they closed two Navy bases here in Maine that were, you know, on the ocean....

Interesting.

Crane lost about 600 jobs in the last round of BRAC (Base Realignment And Closure) back around 2005. It didnt affect me, but with retirees and the workers that welcomed some relocations to other places where the work was moved to, i dont think anybody actually lost their jobs.

You do have a good point by the way...
