My take on production cues is depending on the price you want to spend and what you may like as far as model. I would say Viking, Jacoby, Joss, Schon.

I think vikings play pretty good, and start at just over $100! You can't beat em for $100-200.

Jacoby is one of my personal favorites. Mann they make a hell of a nice playing cue with great overall quality for real reasonable prices. I have a cocobolo plain jane, that I would absolutley NEVER sell. These are very inexpensive and well within your stated price range.

Joss is great as well, I have not checked recently, but my guess is that they start around $250-300 and go up from there.

Schon is probably considered by most to be the best production cue. They start at around $450-500 though, so you will not find a new one for $300 (if you do, let me know!!).

I have owned and played with all of the above brands of cues, and I do not think you would be disapointed with any of them.

I would ask to try out others cues and see which you prefer. Then just find a model that appeals to you that is in line with what you want to spend.

All of these are made right here in the USA, and are of very good quality.

Lucasi cues are a great value and play very good IMO. You can do very well on a deal for a lucasi with a case and a jump cue for $200-250 on ebay ( and maybe a dealer on here could do that as well). I got a nice setup for my girlfriend, and have used her cue when mine was not available. Made overseas, but quite a lot of bang for the buck.

McDermott's "Lucky" line of cues is very affordable, and still made in the USA:

The next line up from the Lucky line is the Star line:

There seems to be a good summary of their cue line here:

I've shot with McDermott cues before (albeit a long time ago), and my opinion back then was that they're pretty "stiff" hitting cues (methinks a previous poster used the "telephone pole" analogy). However, I don't know how the Lucky or Star lines hit -- McDermott might've made a lot of changes since I'd last tried them.

I hope this is helpful!

I'm sooo confused. There are so many out there. I know that I always say, "It's all in the tip," but that's when we're talking someone elses cue...mine is a different story.:) Johnnyt

I am far from the most knowledgeable guy on this board...but here's my two cents.

I bought a Viking maple plain jane with a wrap for about $110 or so on sale. I put a 314-2 on it, and love it. Not trying to start the whole LD shaft debate here, but for $300 I've got a cue that has served me well.

I also have a schmelke cocobolo sneaky that I got for $90 or so. That leaves you money for another shaft, a budget break cue, cheap case or whatever. Made in Wisconsin. Their new "BR" line looks nice, but I haven't hit with one yet. They'll customize their cues a bit-put on the wrap you want (if you want one), shaft diameter, tips, etc. For $150 you should have a cue in a couple of weeks that hits the way you like.

Good luck with your choice.

Thank you all everybody. I guess I have to either roll the dice and get one off the Internet and b**** later that it don't feel right or get off my lazy a$$ and go cue shopping. I'll probably roll the dice for a few hundred. I'll blame it on the price of gas if it doesn't turn out well. Johnnyt

I have a friend that plays with the same cue he seems to like it and certainly shoots well with it ... Good Luck ...in getting back into the game...

Under $300 with a cheap hard case and S&H. Thanks. Johnnyt

Another vote for a McDermott. 300-400 dollars put's you in their professional series cues that have great 3/8X10 pins and wood to wood joints. I find that pin and wood to wood joint combination has a better feel and hit then their higher end cues.

And ya gotta love McD as they are made right here in North America. Good ole Wisconsin. :)

Ill never sell my McD's.
