I had a conversation with a well respected qbuilder about Maple that grew during a mini ice age in the 17th. century. We both thought that the wood from that era would be the best possible for cues. This article, while about musical instruments, supports our hypotheses as well as sheds light on what to look for when searching for "good wood".

Cues with old wood, like Gus cues as a rule play better, old wood is the key.

you can cheat old wood. Maple grown in a cold climate will slow down the growth and the tree will have more rings per inch. If you cut the maple in the winter with all the sap out it will be easier to stress (dry so it stays straight) and be nice and white. When you see someone with a really white shaft (cue) it was cut in the winter.

i have only played with a couple Szambotis so i am no expert,but as a rule i wouldn't agree that they play better than newer made cues.there is plenty of good wood out there.
