So what do you think the average innings are for an APA player?

lorider where about in Memphis are you located? I have an uncle that lives there and has shown some interest in joining a league. I haven't seen him play in a while but would clock him around a 5 or so in both 8 and 9 ball.

i live in bartlett. i play at high pockets mostly. this session just started about 4 weeks ago so there is still about 2 weeks left before cutoff date to join.

have your uncle come to high pockets tue night around 6.30 and go up to the counter and ask for me. my name is buddy, everyone there knows me. i will hook him up with the lo and see what teams and nights are available. this is apa league.

upon talking to him i might could use him on my tue night money league.
its a travel league, play mostly in bars but also in the 3 poolhalls in town.
pm me if you want my number.

i forgot to mention my napa league in case he does not want to fade the slop from low level players in apa :D

i am good friends with the napa lo and play on a team with him. i think he needs some players in a couple divisions he just started.

our 9 ball went like this

5-5 11 innings 18-2 us
5-2 25 innings our 2 wins 12-8
5-5 21 innings 15-5 I win
2-1 15 innings 14-6 us
2-3 16 innings 14-6 them

we win 65-35

yes and no

An SL9 player in my area recently beat a SL6 75 to 3. Same player qualified for the US Amateur 2 years in a row. Many of our players can string together multiple racks of 9 ball.

Problem is that APA skill levels are based on the local competition so an SL8 in one area may be an SL5 in another.

My match with a 7 last night was 65-54 at the end, 35 innings but there were also 15 safeties....so close match but not an awful game on either of our parts...not perfect, but not awful in any regard.

So I don't believe the above is entirely true. Just because I live in a smaller town doesn't mean I can't play just as well as an 8 in another town just because it's a bigger place with more players at higher levels. So I'm an 8 here...maybe I go to a bigger city and struggle a little at first because of the consistent, higher level of competition. At a SL 7,8,9 it's going to be a toss up every time you come to the table... I think with my ability that it wouldn't be long before I was equally competitive at my skill level. I'm not a 5 here or anywhere else. No offense to anyone at that level, I've just earned my SL.
Also, just because people decide to play in APA doesn't mean they aren't good pool players. I know a lot of great players in APA that are good in the league or anywhere else they decide to play, just good, period! Some people just don't want to deal with TAP or BCA because of the types of personalities that are encountered in those money leagues....I can still play with any of them. They aren't better just because they decide not to take part in the APA...

Skill levels vary more due to equipment I think. We play on pro cut diamonds and seem like we are under handicapped when we get to somewhere and they have valley and or diamonds cut where 2 balls can pass at the same time. So our sl4 is there sl5. On the same note I suspect our sl5 would be an sl4 if we played a team that played on 9' diamonds.

Agreed

I do agree that equipment is a big factor. It takes some adjustment for someone who has been shooting well on tables with big pockets to go to a table with smaller, pro cut pockets. So I do agree that my SL8 may not look as strong as a 7, 8, or 9 who is used to playing on that type of table. That makes perfect sense.

Anyone do ACCU-STATS on themselves in league? I've been up and down from .720 to .810 the last month in 9ball. The safety standards are much tougher if I am interpreting correctly... leaving an open look even with no obvious pocket or a low percentage shot still counts as a failure?. The 'defensive shots' category on the APA sheet is just a get out of inning free card as there is no penalty to your rating for leaving wide open shots.

I would like to see what an expected ACCU-STATS rating across levels would look like. Would it even be linear?

I tracked my APA 9 ball stats for about a year and a half while I was an 8 (and later a 9)
I quit the APA shortly after becoming a 9. The 24 rule makes it near impossible to stay on a team.

Did the numbers and it came out to 21.4 average innings.

Going to 65, that's an average run of 3 per inning (though realistically, it's more like you run 7-8 when you get a chance, and there are some safeties or hooks where you run nothing). Going to 75 it's 3.5 balls per.

I guess then the number is your average run once you actually get rolling... but not strictly your average run.

Sucks you had to quit. I have a buddy who got 'locked in' at a 9 during vegas. I dunno exactly how that works, or why the APA doesn't trust its own equalizer system. He got injured at some point, and also just plays less than he used to, and now he shoots like a 7, and some night not even that. He lost like 90% of his matches, there's just no way to realistically expect him to take 7+ points out of every single rack. So he was forced to quit too. And when he played, we had to put up our 2, who is... well, a real 2.

Your buddy should get in contact with the APA national office. I believe they have some sort of medical exemption policy for people who have sustained injuries which make playing at their "locked in" skill level from vegas impossible. Obviously i dont know the criteria or what his injury was, but it is worth a try to find out if that would bring him back to the league.
