Soccer or Pool

I see Brazil winning, but my heart wants the Netherlands to win

Heart: Netherlands, Denmark, Switzerland, Japan
Head: Brazil, Germany

It looks like the US has joined the big league in soccer, and one can sense it's getting bigger here. But there's a long way to go until it's big like it is elsewhere in the world.

I don't really care much for either sport, but soccer's preferable to baseball. I'm tired of the obsession around here with the local baseball team, which pretty much amounts to a religion. Baseball is the sporting equivalent of Valium. The soccer WC is a welcome but brief distraction from that.

I still smile when I hear about the "World Series", there's nothing global about it!

Pool is still the best, by a long shot! :)

I've never played soccer and don't really care to watch it. Like a lot of people, I pay attention at WC time, but that's about it.

My biggest beef with soccer is the diving/acting that goes on. And it seems to be a perfectly acceptable part of the game.

In a highlight the other day, I saw a guy who was running all out step on the ball accidently. He went down pretty hard, then rolled around like he was in excruciating pain. The referee called a foul on the defender next to him even though the guy never touched him. As soon as the foul was called, the guy jumps up and off he goes like nothing ever happened. Personally, I find that embarrassing for the sport.

I guess if the rest of the world doesn't mind, why should I?

I was wondering. If you were unfortunate enought to be involved in a horrendous automobile accident and lost both your arms, couldn't you still try out for the college soccer team and make it? I wonder about stuff like that. It's probably why I don't have a very large circle of friends.

This reminds me of the story of the guy who did loose both arms and was able to get a job chiming the bell in the church steeple.

People would come to see him from miles around, and although not everyone knew his name, they all agreed that his face rang a bell.

The reason I asked this question is because I see a lot of change going on in the secondary games our youth are getting involved in.

When I grew up. all those years ago. There were basically four sports that were popular with young children. I'm including hockey because I grew up in the northeast. The other three were, Baseball, basketball, and football.

Now the choices have grown even larger. Golf, soccer, and lacrosse are now offered in many of the school programs. Snowboarding is in the Olympics. Our youth have so many more options than they did when I grew up.

Poolrooms are closing a lot faster than they are opening. How do kids afford the money it takes to learn how to play the game? I found it ridiculously difficult at 60 cents an hour.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, "We are losing what played a huge roll in the way I grew up. I threw my arm out in Little League, I was to short to make it as a basketball player, I hated the cold weather, so hockey was out of the question. I weighted 165 in High School. I wasn't about to get thrown around like a rag-doll on the football field."

I found the game of pool and it was an instant love affair. I couldn't get enough of it. It helped me grow up and learn many a lesson, that schools couldn't teach me.

Somewhere out there are kids like me. We need to find a way to get some of them involved in the game of pool. They're missing out on so much.

Will any child ever say, "I want to be a pool player, when I grow up."

Clearly soccer is more important. More money and more fans. If the US wins the World Cup of Soccer there will be parades and pictures the the President.

If Archer and Morris win the World Cup they get some cash and an article on AZ billiards. This is no comparison. A better question would be to compare Soccer to one of the Big 4 sports not something like Pool that pays less than Darts. For the record Darts is the nuts to watch.

Yeah, I hate that part too. It is so obviously drama. Especially bad seem to be the teams of Latin decent, Italians, Spanish, and especially the South Americans. The good thing is that they can be given a yellow card for taking an obvious dive.

That is the problem now isn't it? No kids are picking up the game unless their parents just happen to play. It's not hopeless, but it is discouraging.

this is a really strange question and a bit of a reach considering the fact that the two situations have absolutely no parrallels and nothing to do with one another.

I think CLEARLY the more obvious and talked about issue is the lack of support for soccer in this country... seeing as how its the biggest sport on the planet.

Pool.. not so much. And competition from overseas is a great thing... we still hold some of the best players on the planet on our side.

weird question dude.

oh, and GO USA!

I thought this thread was going to be asking whether you should watch the USA game on saturday or play a tournament. That's the issue I'm struggling with now.
