Soft Break Will Finish 9 Ball For Good

If all of the top promotors that holds 9 ball tournaments doesn't step up and put a stop to the soft break, 9 ball will be a game of the past. More and more of the pros are soft breaking in 9 ball and not just the U.S players. They have to. It's just like the jump cue. Probably 90% of the pro players hate them, but if they want to cash they have to have one and know how to use it. IMO (and it will happen soon) top amateurs are going to be seen cashing high in pro 9 ball events and some will win them. As soft as they are breaking now and with clean balls, fast cloth, and bouncy rails, "A" players are going to spend less than a dozen hours figuring the 9 ball slow break out. Add pattern racking to the their break and the MR and it's really a no brainer. Just breaking the balls enough to separate them for position for the runout or W/O even trying you get a ball lined up for the combo on the 9. We all know where the 9 will be after the break with the MR. Either fix 9 ball or have the open events 10 ball. I can't believe they have let the soft break go this far. Maybe we do need the MC people to come over and run U.S pool. Johnnyt

Pros should be playing 10 ball anyway.

I love your point JohnnyT, there should be a true governing rule to the sport of billiards, would also like to add cue length, shaft diameter, construction and pick a pocket size along with a table. Then maybe we can play a set. of course you will still have to spot me the 7,8 & 9 along with the break but then will have a game.

The break too? LOL. Johnnyt

Get rid of the soft break and get rid of all safety play.
Can't stand it when people shoot a shot and miss on purpose.

Agree with this!!! ^^^^^

To the OP...9-ball will never be a "thing of the past". The youngsters (at least here in my area) want to play something fast...something less "strategic"...and 9-ball seems to ALWAYS be the game they want to play at the pool halls (followed by 8-ball). Now...I'm referring to young players in the pool halls, not pro/regional tournament players of any age.

The kids want to win based on shooting ability...not thought processes.

9-ball ain't goin' nowhere anytime soon.

Just my humble opinion.

You can miss on purpose...leave your opponent safe...and still make it look like you were attempting to shoot a ball in a hole.

Get rid of safety play?!? LOL

I don't even understand why there is still 9 Ball being played at the professional level. Should be all 10 Ball if they're gonna play rotation.

Sometimes I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not.

If you are not being sarcastic, it's quite possible you just fell off your rocker.

I agree. Ya know what else I can't stand? In football, when a team tries to stop their opponent from getting the ball into the endzone.

You're right that's the worst isn't it, how can they try to stop their opponent
should be illegal.

I don't get it. Isn't it the object to make balls on the break?
Personally I think pool and 9 ball will be around for ever

I agree, it won't go way from the poolrooms, but I'm talking pro and open events that people watch. It's fun to watch the soft break runouts in the beginning, but if you're truly a player and/or a fan of the game you know how easy this is to do. I hope they don't stop it so I can prove my point. You will see very soon 32 entrants in a open 9 ball event with 90% or more of them breaking like Corey, SVB, Dennis, and a dozen more are now. That is not pool where I come from and probably not your cup of tea to watch either. Johnnyt

Sorry, I guess I was wrong. You guys want to watch the same pattern break or same combo, break after break, after break, after break. Enjoy, I'm done here. Johnnyt

You need to learn to appreciate the beauty and skill of a well-executed safety.
These shots are just like any other shot, and safeties can be amazing.
They are not "flawed " just because a ball did not fall.

And he won it with the soft break and pattern racking too. Show how pool has come a long way.

My point was, Corey did this 13 years ago and you said 9ball will become a game of the past. It hasn't.
