Soft Hitting Cues

Sometime before the year ends I'm looking to upgrade my player. Currently I shoot with a Players cues,12mm LD shaft, and I'm happy with it except for a ping sound I get on shots where I let my stroke out.

I want something that's LD and has a soft hit to it. I'm looking for a production cue as well; I know the advice is to head to a custom cue marker but that's not in the cards yet. I'm thinking about an OB cue but not so sure.

Any of you guys have tastes similar to mine with regards to cues? Feel free to include tip options as well (was thinking about a Moori Ultra, or a Zen I think it was called. Kamui SS still wasn't soft enough for me).

The softest hitting cues I know are Meuccis. I'm sure you know someone who has one. Worth a try if soft is what you want, HOWEVER and I can't stress this enough: DO NOT BUY A NEW MEUCCI. They have a well deserved reputation for warping a failures of all kinds. You should only buy a used meucci that is at least one year old and is dead straight. Run your fingers all over it to make sure the finish or inlays are not popping. If it is at least a year old and has been used without any of the above problems, it is probably safe to buy.

The OB1 and OB2 are probably as soft, but I think they have a terrible hit. I hate the wooden ferrule and actually prefer no ferrule to a ferrule like that.

Save yourself some money and try a Kamui Black Clear Super Soft tip. Chances are a tip change will be all you need unless you really want a new cue. Use your savings to get some lessons from Scott Lee and Geno the Machino, in that order.

Just saw you tried a Kamui SS, have it cut down a few layers after install or maybe you got a bad one, haven't seen it happen yet and we've sold 100's of them.

My cue maker gave me a cue to use with a Kamui Clear Super Soft and it is the nuts. Try one before buying an new cue. I also endorse using the cash for a lesson from Scott Lee (I don't care where you live he passes by all the time) and then call Geno. If I am hitting them bad all I have to do is think of my time with Scott and then a phone call I had with Geno and I can pull it together in a real short time.
 
I like a soft hit also. Hate that ping sound. I occasionally play the OB2 plus with a maple ferule and morakami soft tip. Very soft hit. The only thing I don't like about the OB is the taper. I prefer a pro taper like my Joss shaft has so I go back and forth depending on the size of the table and what game we are playing.
 
I would buy an OB-121 cocobolo sneaky pete cue with an OB1+ shaft, and I just happen to have a brand new one available.
 
Change the tip..... Even an elkmaster would work. Earl Strickland uses one. So does another local pro. Food for thought.
 
I had a Rosewood/Birdseye Maple Erwin that hit like a wet noodle. It was the epitome of soft hitting cues. I played with a 29" Tiger Ultra-X LD shaft that weighed well under 4oz. The entire cue hit like a bunny fart.
 
Z, next time you're in Chicago let's play and you can try my OB121 with an OB2 (UltraSkin S) and OB2+(Kamui SS) shafts. I think the OB2 is a little softer than the OB2+, but they're both soft.

I don't remember my Player's HXTE10 pinging on power shots, but it's been a long time. Maybe your tip has hardened up, or did it always do this?

I am not trying to be a smart a$$, If the shaft you have now. that you said you liked but didn't like the sound.

You could try to not focus on the sound it makes, or You could buy some ear plugs.

Honestly most soft hitting shafts have been whittled on to death.

Personally I like solid maple shafts and their harmonics..................................

It's not just the sound it makes, the physical feedback is weird. I figured mentioning the sound would suffice but I get really awful feedback from some shots.

Like if you hit a baseball wrong and the bat vibrates through your hands. I get a similar feeling though not nearly as much (I hope!).

I shot with Meucci's for 20+ years and I agree, they do hit well with soft shots and a loose grip. I also recommend Lucasi, I shot with one for a few months last year and it hit very well with soft shots.
 
Soft tip and change your bumper to a softer rubber and/or a larger one like a limb saver. Bumper are meant to reduce the amount of vibration the hand feels once contact has been made. Same works in reverse. I had a cue that hit too soft. I eventually had a Delrin bolt installed and took the bumper out. Nice crisp got now.
 
Some good ideas here. Another one is have a cue maker change the joint to Juma. It will help absorb the vibration, give it a "softer" feel, and change the weight and balance point.
