I already showed how to properly stage Straight Pool. In 1995, in Portland, ME I added $25,000 to the "Maine Event, won by Efren.The MPBA donated $5,000 to the tournament and they decided that Mike Zugland couldn't play because of some problem with them. That was totally unacceptable to me so I got on the phone and straightened the matter out immediately.Before you ask the reason the tournament wasn't held in successive years is because for this event I had $15,000 in sponsorship money and none of the companies wanted to participate again. Sad,because that was one hell of a tournament. Tough pockets and still four runs of over 100.
By the way, I had a two inning game with a 102 ball run, available with Accu-stats and a three inning game in that tournament. Some of the players in this last event in NJ have never had a two inning game.
In Columbia, SC in 2003 I had Straight Pool and One Pocket at the Sheraton hotel. I lost $10,000 on it but it was a great affair. Just ask anyone who was there.
Wouldn't it be nice if next year I could practice for a discipline I have always loved instead of having to defend myself for being offended at not getting an invite? It's degrading to have to qualify.
That's all I have to say until next year on this subject.

so we cant have an invite tourney..... too many people playing favorites... ok
So now it cant be Open, based on qualifing, cause thats degrading.......

A legendary player of Grady's status should be considered a legacy player and not be required to perform in a qualifier tournament.

There's way too much backstabbing, back biting and ugly backroom nonsense going on in our sport.

Grady, you will never see The Woim questioning your playing skills and no one questions your tournament organizing skills because I of the respect I have for you. It's just too bad it has to come to this.

This is actually good discussion point, "free pass for legacy players." Remember that everytime you give someone a free pass, you are actually preventing someone else to enter.

I have that match of you against Dallas West, and it was one of the toughest 100+ ball runs I've ever seen. The balls were never cooperative but Grady weaved his way through those balls in an amazing fashion - taking off angle banks, weird cuts, aggressive play and impressive to say the least! Billy Incardona commentated that match along with Dick Lane and they were both impressed. Much more interesting than watching "easy" (is that an oxymoron) 150 runs where the balls just all fall into place. Ok, maybe easy isn't the best description...LOL.

This is the kind of response I think people can relate to. You will definitely get more sympathy and understanding with this sort of comment.

sometimes the less said the better,

the internet can help and/or harm people public image depending on their use of the internet.

I believe that Grady isnt getting the highest and best use on the internet, he is causing his image more harm than good, he is a ledgend in pool rooms-not the internet.

My 3 cents, it was 2 cents but the price went up.
 
So if Rod Laver or Bjorn Borg or Billie Jean King wanted to be in the US Open they should get their way. Are you kidding me? They would be laughed off the court.They would never expose themselves to such nonsense. They remain as some of the greatest players we ever had. And they keep their integrity and respect by knowing what is the correct thing to do for their sport. You keep saying I dont want to be associated with Charlie but then you ask why you werent invited? Youre acting out of your own ego not reality.

He kept playing way past his prime, and was preventing a young talent from getting a spot. Eventually, Jack woke up and stopped trying to compete with the world class players.

This reminds me of when Payne Stewart made some derogatory comments about Nicklaus and a Ryder Cup spot. Payne behaved with brashness and arrogance in his early days. He matured into a great champion.

Nicklaus played much less after his prime than did Palmer. He was always cognizant of being competitive. But the vast majority of players and fans loved to see these guys that greatly advanced the game of golf, come out and play and promote the game. Most players recognize that Nicklaus, Palmer, and a few others are the reason they are playing for such large money, and give them their due respect.

To call letting the great elder players play, getting a "free pass" is to ignore and disrespect their contributions to the game.

Grady is an accomplished Legend, no denying that. But he has certainly not endeared himself to the masses with his constant whining, moaning, beeyatching and crying of late. Haysoos-faakin-kriest let it go, man!

Now he just comes off sounding like a crazy ol' hoot whose optic nerve got crossed with his rectum --- he has a real shitty outlook on life!

His accomplishments used to speak for themselves. It is unfortunate that he decided to let his cynical mouth do the talking instead.

This is how I veiw it as well.
 
Randy G...why was the invitational format chosen? Can't they just make it an open with seeding? Would the event be that big that it couldn't be held as an open event? Seems like you might also get more spectator attendence if the locals in that area had more people entered into the contest. Seeding the people you wanted to invite would give them a round 1 bye. If Grady belongs there, getting by the first round should not be such a hassle, especially if its a first round / round robin setup.

Based on another thread . . .

There is not enough tournament that can be used to rank players. Randy got the list of US players from BCA-UPA (most likely informal ranking based on recent performances). It's not Randy's VIP list as most of the posters think. He got the list of European players from the European BCA-counterpart, same was true for Japan. By the way, this was only a problem with the US players selection because Europe and Japan have active Straight Pool tournaments. Anyone who was not part of the BCA-UPA list would have to play the qualifier event.

This was a WPA sanctioned World Championship, so Randy could not bypass BCA (at least ethically).

So the real question is why Grady was not part of the BCA-UPA list of possible invitees.

You are comparing two sports that don't compare in this case. We all talk about how pool is a sport where age has no bearing. And Efren Reyes and Wu Chia Ching prove it. Cowboy Jimmy Moore used to reportedly run a hundred balls a day in his eighties.

The point Grady was making is that politics should be suspended in order to get the best players. Especially IF you are going to have a World Championship event.

Earl complains about everything at the Matchroom events. Still they invite him because they like the draw he provides and because he IS a 3 time World Champion in that discipline.

It was a travesty and an affront to Grady's status to not have invited him. That remains a fact pure and simple. It was an insult to make him have to try and qualify for an event that players who will never have a tenth of his credentials were invited to. That sort of deliberate slap in the face does nothing, as we see here, to unite pool.

Charlie Williams is getting a lot of praise for doing a lot for pool in Korea. He is well spoken and has found a place on Earth where he can make something happen with corporate sponsors who will listen to him. But what does he do for pool in the USA? Some for sure, by putting on some tournaments. But being deliberately divisive is not the example of greatness.

And that goes for you too Grady. Don't live in the past. Practice for the discipline you love and win the qualifier and then win the tournament. That is the best answer to the insult that the tournament organizers gave you. Let your discontent motivate you.
