Some Questions About What IS and IS NOT Possible

Hello all, thanks in advance for any guidance / advice you can provide!

What I'm designing/building is not a cue per se but it is cylindrical, involves custom inlay work, and I have yet to find a more knowledgeable crowd than cue makers when it comes to this particular combination :)

I'll describe what I believe to be the best process for arriving at a product ready to perform inlay work on that meets my specifications.


  • Take 1 1/4" square stock (ebony), length of 3" and drill a 7/8" hole.
  • Sleeve the hole with a stainless steel pipe (threaded on both ends [female so it sits flush]).
  • After the glue has fully dried, turn the piece down to slightly over 1" (1" will be the final diameter) to be ready for inlay pockets to be cut.

After the inlay pockets have been cut and the inlays glued in place, allow to set for about 10 days and then perform the final turn down to 1". Finish with shellac, sand, polish.

Please feel free to correct anything above or comment on any part of the process you think might not be possible :thumbup:

On to my questions! I know it's a bit out of the ordinary but here goes:

1) Is it ok that the inlay pockets will be cut 1/8" deep (to the steel sleeve)?
2) What is the minimal amount of material that should be left at an edge before an inlay pocket is cut?
3) The design I've put together has two over-sized inlays. As I understand it, these two inlays would have to be machined on a 3 axis cnc in order to create a concave back to avoid runout at the edges during the final turn. Is this correct?
4) Is it possible to finish something like this in a natural stained wood looking finish but still have enough durability where the inlays will stay in place for years to come? (I'm torn between a natural finish and a deep glossy finish)

I'm quite new to all of this but I've tried to read as much as possible (forums, how tos, etc...) to answer my own questions. It's gotten me this far, but I was unable to find answers to the above questions on my own. Any help is greatly appreciated!
 
If it has a .875 hole and is only 1 inch round then there is only .125 total left or .0625 per side which is 1/16 of an inch.

Would need to leave the wood at 1.125 or 1 1/8 inch and then do the .125 inlays and pockets which are flat, put the inlays in with 5 minute epoxy, wait a day and then turn it down to 1 inch which would make the inlays round and the material round.

Now how wide can the inlays be in with .875 hole into 1 inch dowel, around .300 and that would depend on the material.

Don't know how wide the inlays are but if you have to do a concave inlay it will have to be done with 4th axis for the male and female.

Indeed, bad math on my part. The ID of the steel pipe cannot change so it would, indeed, have to be a 1 1/8" final diameter. Thank you, good catch!
 
It sounds like you can do the inlay work with flat bottom inlays provided the inlays are not real wide. If the inlays are pretty wide you may have to turn it round first then put the inlays in deeper and then drill your hole right through the round piece and bottom of the inlays.
 
cueman is right. Turn the ebony round, inlay the material deep, turn round, bore for the pipe and glue it in.
 
Hi,

Shellack is not for finishing. Most people including myself use it for a sanding sealer. After a detailed sanding an epoxy substrate is applied, cured, sanded then the finish is applied before wet sanding and buffing. This is a tricky business so don't be surprised if there are gremlins revealed after your done.

To get a world class finish you need to have a ton of work under your belt because the devil is in the detail and there are a ton of details to sort each and every time to get a perfect result and repeatability.

Also the glue you use for inlays will be critical. Slow cure - high modulus is always the best bet for inlays.

Concerning the edges on the sides of the wide pockets, I would not wish to go thinner than .040 on the Y apex points. But you could go thinner. I would just translate the design sizing down as not to push the envelope to be safe. Once you get that steel pipe in there if your concentricity is off a little you could pay the price on the edges. Ouch!
