Some Random Straight Pool Thoughts and Questions

I love the game of straight pool, and I know that many on this forum do as well so I thought I'd take some time and present some of the things I've been thinking about lately.

1. Why has it been since 2000 since the BCA has put on a U.S. Open Straight Pool tournament? Don't you think they could at least scrap up enough money and wherewithal to have one every other year or so?

2. Following from that are there any plans to have another World Straight Pool tournament this year? Even though I wasn't there I enjoyed someone holding a tournament and me getting to follow it on the web. Maybe we can get Accu-stats involved this time. Also, what does everyone on here think about having a system similar to the old days where players could defend the title in tournaments or in arranaged challenge matches a la boxing?

3. Finally did anyone see the article in Billiards Digest that discussed Jerome Keough's invention of the game? Apparently his initial idea was to have the balls racked at alternating ends of the table after each rack was finished. I haven't tried this method, but it seems like it would add a whole new deminsion in terms of manufacturing a breakshot.
 
Oh man that's incredible. I wonder why I haven't heard more about this. It sounds like a pretty big deal, and I'm sure it will be if all of the best players plan on attending. Anyone have any more details on the BCA's Qlympics?

I spoke with Mark Griffin at DCC this year; and he was quite enthusiastic about the November event in Louisville (which will be designated as the U.S. Open). He hopes to make it an annual event.

I for one plan on supporting the event by entering. Any of you straight pool fanatics should do the same (and plan a little trip to Betmore's Basement for some tune-up sessions).

If we can just convince sjm to break away from that tiresome day job in NYC and make the trip to Louisville in November; that would certainly lend an air of legitimacy to the proceedings.

I plan to enter also. I called the BCA about this yesterday, the lady on the phone did not seem to know to many details, but she thought anybody could enter as long as they are a registered BCA player. To register, simply fill out an application and pay $25. Mailing in my app today.
 
I entertained the thought of entering the tournament for about 10 seconds before I realized that I just set my new high run mark today at an awe-inspiring 22. If there is anyway possible for me to attend the event however I'll be there.

The 2000 event was reported to have lost in the vicinity of $100,000. It may be been overproduced for the available audience. Tickets were about $50/session.

The rumor is that the WC14.1 will be held again this year.

I hope to see you in Louisville in November.

Well, I suck also but ...

I know they want to start running this every year, but there is no guarantee that the event will be held again any time soon. I can't think of anything cooler than playing the US Open Straight Pool tournament, so for an opportunity like this, I am not going to let a little thing like sucking stop me.

I’m not sure about the specifics of this tournament but in the past when Griffin had a mix of tournaments such as BCAPL 9 ball tourney and US Open one pocket the BCAPL membership was not needed for the one pocket. I assume the same will hold true for the US Open 14.1.

It ain’t so.

I’m currently undergoing extensive debriefing for treatment to prolonged exposure to WBM.. I should be back to normal soon.

Next time I won’t allow him to quit.
