Mike, I will put you in the box against Shane for 10k, but only if you'll bet with Tate on yourself against Shane. Tate likes to bet 50k minimum.

It's a freeroll with side action.

That's not a free roll, if I have you stuck though and you see me in action, it can always go right back into action. If I win $1500 from you at $500/bet then trust me I won't tell you the new bet is $250. That's all f*ck boy stuff.

Of course totally different if you're busto and can't cover a bet. I did have a guy win a set for a dime on me before, then lose a set right after and somehow only had $700. Claimed he was getting staked the first set. I sold his P3.

...There is a clear tendency of the term to be used on weaker players, when in fact it would be more aptly applied to the high level ones. They are the ones with the experience to calculate the odds, yet they rarely give anybody a fair game. A nit, to them, is someone who refuses to pay for the privilege of playing them, by agreeing to play without adequate weight. They will toss the term around liberally, yet when you look at their winning percentages and the ratio of games won and lost, it gets pretty clear who the real nits are....

End the thread...we have a winner

Someone who bets but has no gamble. Won't match up evenly and won't bet unless they are guaranteed to win. Someone so afraid of losing 20 bucks they nit pick everything.

Someone who folds aces preflop after someone raises. Oddly enough there are a couple of instances where folding aces preflop is correct.

Is there a name for someone like Thorsten Hohman, who has nothing against money players, but personally has no interest giving away his money or taking anyone else's in pool games?

When I use to be a "road player" ( early 80's to early, late 90's) A " nit" was someone who played real good but wouldn't bet. That... my friends...defines a "NIT" :D John B.

A nit, by definition, is something small.......it can be the egg of a louse, or a young louse.
......it is also defined as one candle power in luminosity.

Around action, a nit is someone who thinks small.
About 400 miles north of me, a man owned a hotel who liked playing gin rummy and bar
box 8-ball.....any decent gambler could win a few thousand if he could play.
A world class player that wouldn't bet much passed through and beat him on the bar box
for $70....at $10 a game.....THAT is a NIT.

Nit

gambling term. usually found in poolrooms. Refers to:
1. Someone who's so afraid to lose a bet that they have to be coddled and convinced for an hour that they're going to have a great time and probably win, too. Eventually they may play, but by the time they get on the table the stakes are so low the table-time will eat any winnings you make.
2. someone who won't play unless they have a guaranteed sure win.
3. someone who'll squeeze a dollar 'til george's eyes pop out of the paper.
that guy's such a nit- he wouldn't bet a nickel that water's wet.

Enjoy'

The problem is that in the pool room, water may not actually be wet. The pool room is an alternate universe, wherein degenerate ne'er-do-well's attempt to cheat folks out of their money. The thought of any of my cash ending up in their wallet, EVER, is enough to make me puke. I will gamble, and I will even gamble on pool. But I will NEVER gamble in a pool room, because there, even if you win, you actually lose in the long run. IF you win, you will never hear the end of it. The person you beat will incessantly pester you for months/years for a healthy spot and then if you don't agree, you are some sort of pariah.

So, in other words, you are "drawing dead" (to use another gambling term) in a pool room in my view.

I generally do whatever betting I do these days in a civil environment...the race track...:D

nits are tight with their money and dont gamble high or easily.

the opposite of a nit is a broke sucker who thinks he is a big spender and gambler.

the only people that call someone a nit are those that need to demean others for their own shortcomings.

and a person that gambles with way the best of it isnt a nit he is called smart.

A nit is someone like Mike Dechaine haha. Once his resident Cock suckers report back to him that I said that he'll be all in my messages asking me to delete this. Nah for real he's a nit cause he won't bet on himself playing SVB on a freeroll. For that matter anyone who won't bet on them self whIle on a free roll is a nit. That's my permanent stance on that. Carry on!

I can't stop laughing:)

In case you missed it, or read it again...

From what I've read on these forums a "nit" is someone that won't end his days in a shitty motel without a dime to his name. Seriously, a lot of behavior that people on here call "nitty" is just common sense. For instance if you are a C-player, refusing a big money game against an A+ player is usually the smart thing to do. He probably won't give you the kind of handicap you'd need to win, which would sound ridiculous. People are very bad at calculating the odds of winning. For someone who's able to run 3-5 balls (for instance) they are extremely low against a high level player, and in fact that kind of player almost always win these kinds of bets. The real weight that needs to be given sounds exceessive and anyone who demands them will be called a nit.

I think the word nit is more like a strategy used by gamblers to bully players into playing, more than an apt description of a persons character in about 99% of the cases. There is a clear tendency of the term to be used on weaker players, when in fact it would be more aptly applied to the high level ones. They are the ones with the experience to calculate the odds, yet they rarely give anybody a fair game. A nit, to them, is someone who refuses to pay for the privilege of playing them, by agreeing to play without adequate weight. They will toss the term around liberally, yet when you look at their winning percentages and the ratio of games won and lost, it gets pretty clear who the real nits are... I lost plenty of such games in the beginning when I was learning pool, but unlike a lot of people I knew what was actually taking place, and never got tricked into doubling the bet etc.

I've heard a plethora of different people called a 'nit' and can't find a common denominator for what a nit actually is.

The common denominator is no heart. A nit is too cautious and offensive with how unevenly he ALWAYS wants to match up even for small amounts of money.

Nits have ZERO gamble in them meaning that they either won't match up without the absolute best of it and then even when they have the best of they won't bet anything.

So in other words a nit is a locksmith with no gamble. At least a locksmith will bet something and you have a chance no matter how small to book a decent winner if you can outrun the nuts.
