Gang, I relocated to OKC from Shreveport, La, a week ago.

Anyone care to recommend places to play? I am living close to the Slick Willie's on NW Expressway, if anyone cares to meet me there and play some.

Thanks for any help.

Jamaica Joe's is the premier place for equipment and tournaments. Joe's has 16 top notch Diamond bar boxes and 3 9' Diamond tables.

AAA is our one and only non smoking room. They have 3 gold crowns, 2-3 snookers tables one of which is a 6x12, 1 billiard table and 6 or so Shelty bar boxes. Also, Kent at AAA is a top notch cue maker.

Chester's has, I think, 6 gold crowns, a snooker and 6 or so Diamond bar boxes.

Don Quixote's has 7 Diamond tables.

The Regency in Moore has 6 Diamond tables and a top notch owner.

Lyrewood's and Mike's are both close to you but I don't know much about them. OUSooner here knows about those. Maybe he can enlighten us.

Last but not least...

I would advise you to join our Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/oklahomapoolplayers/

Hit me up via Facebook and I would meet up and play some. I prefer AAA and Jamaica Joe's though....so much I drive to those from Mustang. ;)

Welcome to OKC!

While I was a teenager...just teenage bar pool....I used to play at the Rock A Way south of Guthrie/North of Edmond on old hi-way 77? However you look at it. One table biker bar type place...many fond memories there. It must all be one suburb by now around the Rock?

Odd you'd bring this up...I've been thinking about who is the "best" pool player ever from the Sooner State? I wouldn't have a clue?

Never heard of the Rock. But I grew up in Norman and only moved to Mustang in about 2002.

Some would say Walden. Some would say Hitchcock. Who knows we might be saying Chip or Joey before long!

I think that both of them are great, but they have a long way to go to pass up Waldon when it comes to High Stakes I believe.

I remember the Rock a way club. They put on a pretty decent monthly tournament at one time. I remember I liked it for sure but the details are kinda scetchy its been so long. I think it was a $5 entry with a nice calcutta but even top players could walk out with some money that made it worth the drive if they won. Lots of players and lots of action in the Calcutta. The one thing I do remember for sure was a guy they called Woodcutter running the Calcutta. They had more than one table too. That place was like a house with different rooms and multiple levels.

As for the best player from the sooner state Okie gave the best answer I believe. Gabe and Danny Harriman have also called the state home, as have other great players but Walden or Hitchcock would have to be the best FROM the state so far.

I called him Woodpecker and he would grab my neck until I got my mind right. LOL. Always down on his luck but played pretty good, just shot too hard. Rockaway is still rocking. Woodcutter (firewood by the way was his craft) passed away maybe five years ago. Said to be one of the oldest bars in Okla., about half mi. West of I-35 on Seward road I think. Benny Branch was probably the best player ever from Guthrie. Pretty sure Buddy Hall played there some and knew Benny. They used to throw dice in a church pew in the basement! Want to know what a bar looked like in 1930, visit the Rockaway!

I hate to hear that about Woodcutter. He was always a fun guy to be around.

I remember Benny. Your story of guys playing dice in the basement is exactly the kind of memories I get from the Rock a way. The tournament I spoke of earlier was just to assemble all of the players. Anyone could win because it was eightball a race to 2 on the winners and race to 1 on the losers. It was still lots of fun because of the Calcutta and the action taking place all over the bar. Quarter tossing, dice, cards, pool (of course) etc. There were good players showing up from all over, OKC, tulsa, Enid had some good players. It was a good time.
