I was playing in my buddies apa team, and I drew a player that no one really wanted to play, but I figured i'd give it a run at out running his 'Slam em hard as possible and hope' style. Anyway I jump out to a 14-2 lead in the first two racks.

Anyway about the 7th rack we're close [ Both racing to 38 iirc the handicap correctly] and I'm at 29 and he blows his shot on the one, so I'm immediately thinking run as far as You can and then duck, make him give you ball in hand and get out to the end. One ball's straight in, and as I go to shoot his team mate stands directly in my line of sight and speaks to me saying and I quote "d**n __insert name_____ must be nice to make this kid your personal Rack B*TCH!" and I immediately slide out of stance, look at him, tell HIS team captain [whom is also our league director] to politely keep his team out of my game, particularly when they're violating the 'apa etiquette' rule. OUR LEAGUE DIRECTOR LOOKED ME IN THE eye and responded with "Quit being a crybaby and shoot B*TCH" and so I immediately got down into stance, Cued low and Intentionally fouled the cue ball off the table in the direction of the shooting gallery that was talking.

Hit one of them in the chest, and he comes up fired up, threatens me and tells me that he's gonna beat my teeth in. I smirk, break my cue down, and politely say that We could walk out the back door and that there's nothing but air and opportunity after that. Of course he declines, and the league Director immediately calls the area apa manager and tells him that I intentionally shot a ball at one of his teammate, yet neglects to mention the conversation where I was called a b*tch by his team mate and the director.

I was asked to 'Never be present upon APA night at that particular place again otherwise they would have me escorted out by the police' to which the owner laughed and told them that I was more than welcome any night, that my money spent as well as theirs did.

So situation considered how would you have reacted to having someone that's in charge of your entire league talk to you like this?

P.S. There's NO alcohol in our local room.

Anyway i really wish I'd punched each and everyone of them in the face, but alas.

Intentionally miscuing doesn't put enough speed on the ball. I'd prefer jump with a break cue right at the peanut gallery.

those guys were soooo uncivilized...

impolite

Act like that with no booze??? I NEVER act like that when I'm sober!!!

gotta say it was

What you did was the wrong thing to do, but damn, that must have been satisfying.

I know it wasn't the correct thing to do, but it's seriously flagging 100% when the guy makes an intentional effort to move into my line of sight, say both MY name and My opponent's name as he begins to talk trash. Granted I fully accept that shooting the peanut gallery was the wrong thing to do, but there are three things that get me in the situation with the handling.

1) our league director plays on a team and fully takes advantage of his position in being the one who makes the calls

2) he represents the APA and fully out and out violated the etiquette rules outlined in the guidebook. [ Which he is so very very quick to call when someone else violates em.]

3) he's disrespectful when he's supposed to be the leading example of what to do when repping the APA

Now not to say that i'm the biggest fan of the APA format or the entire thing, because my general opinion is that its the Sandbagging league. Not knocking it for the people who enjoy it, but it's not my cup of tea.
But shouldnt the person making the final judgement calls on these things be unbiased and not involved for it to be a fair shake?

Anyway it was fun to cue ball sparky in the chest. wrong thing to do but satisfying and it didn't get me banned from the pool room like fist fighting or hitting em with a cue woulda. :P

You should have won the match! Don't let them succeed!

Obviously, the score and winning is very important to them. Get them where it hurts. Their goal is winning at any cost, don't let them get away with it.

If someone is sharking , or getting in your shot- keep your cool. Politely ask them to stop it, refocus and punish them on the score sheet.

USUALLY, if the players make atempts to distract you, and you just ignore it, they will see it isn't working and give up on it. If it continues and is blatent. Calmy call it for what it is and ask them to quit. DO NOT give it more power by making a big deal out of it, yelling, name calling, etc.

When gambling, I used to have guys who would grab the rack when I am shooting say the 7 , 8 or 9 ball, trying to rush you and force an error.

My response is to NOT SAY A WORD, walk back to my chair, set down my playing cue, and grab my break cue, and sit patiently in my chair for them to rack.

The response is always the same, " What are you doing, the game isn't over, it is still your shot!"

" Oh, I thought you were conceding the game, you seemed like you were in such a hurry to start the next game, I didn't want to waste any more time shooting that easy out. Either it is so easy, that you are willing to concede the game, or it isn't. In which case, you need to stay in your chair and let me shoot my turn"

The most important part is NOT getting worked up. Do not let on that it bugs you at all. Speak calmly and matter of factly. Do not get down and fire balls in and change your game. That is the whole point of sharking, to get you to react!

Take control of the situation and turn it back on them. They will get that it isn't working, and that it is just making them look foolish and worried about losing. Well, most will, anyway.

Point is, don't feed it. Stay focused. If nothing else, just take the opportunity to practice your focus and make evry effort to overcome. It will just make you more prepared in the future and make you tougher to beat!

you need more practice

You need more practice on your miscues! I have never played league but the sharking in bars has been similar. An errant cue ball to the 'nads or skull is much better. Then a very loud but deadpan, "Oops, I'm sorry that was an accident" to finish the deal. Accidents happen especially when you are distracted. I have even had people place a hand on the table with fingers over the cushion. I can tell you that balls don't bank off of fingers accurately even when fired at with warp speed or maybe especially when fired at with warp speed.

I have played contact pool, slamming a butt into the ribs of someone that made a habit of crowding behind me on critical shots too. Another one of them danged accidents. "Ohhh, I'm sorry, I didn't know you were there!"

Two ways to play the jerks, ignore them and win anyway or fight fire with fire. I have to admit that I'd probably ignore them now but the "accidents" were a lot more fun!

air and opporitunity is a great line - i have to remember that one. i have had simmilar stuff happen to me and have given a simmilar reaction. i have also had it happen in bca. people are a**holes and it sucks. i have picked the cue ball up and "tossed" it at my opponent after he called me a ***** for intentionally giving him ball in hand. am i i proud of my behavior? no. did i loose the match and get a warning about being tossed from the apa permanently? sure. do alot of people test me anymore? nope. if you want to test people and use words that will provoke anger you better be ready for retaliation. if you pulled that shit gambling you'd be close to serious harm in a lot of rooms.

That's why I don't play BCA or APA.

I think I would have just gone and sat down and told them that as soon as they stop playing their little games, I would continue shooting.

Sounds to me like the guy was making a joke about you beating the kid. I probably would have laughed, but then again I never have played in an APA league because there are some people who take it far more seriously than I do and want to start trouble.

You should have won the game, laugh in their faces then proceeded to beat the eyeballs out of their heads!!

"'Never be present upon APA night "

Follow that advice and leave the APA far, far behind you.

I would add that responding to verbal taunts with physical violence is never appropriate, even though everyone feels it was right or they deserved it or whatever. If you had broken someone's nose, knocked out a few teeth etc. and had gotten into real trouble it would be your a$$ on the line...and for what...because a group of loud-mouthed APA losers got under your skin?

It has happened to all of us, but you were wrong in trying to hit them with a cue ball, or any ball for that matter...and I think you know that.

(PS...I did get some satisfaction from them getting hit...but you get my point)

Bahaha.

Really now.. think about it..

Jerk is getting mad, so... just make him more mad.

If I'm playing somebody that's going to be a jerk, I just like to piss them off even more! I would have said, "Why, yes, I do like having him be my rack b****. It was either him or you." And then I would've made the shot and hooked that SoB as soon as I could. Then rinse and repeat.. make a shot, hook.. make a shot, hook. Nothing makes them flip their lid faster than knowing their losing and having somebody toy around with them to intentionally make them more upset. Oh, and do it all with a s***-eating grin!

But then again, I've learned in a bar - getting drunk, getting bumped, shouting, music.. you name it.

Yeah

I do know I was wrong in responding with physical violence. Considering that my true problem is that I make a request of our tournament director [whom was on the team that I was playing against] and he starts running his mouth.

The twisted thing is, is the week before HE made the same request and said that if he didn't get the trash talk away that it would be brought to the attention of the person above him.

Either way, I did what I did and I take responsibility. The reason the physical violence happened was just instinctive. Sit them down, shut them up. Had we been gambling it would have been a similar reaction.

I talked to the room owner today and told him I was going to come in on league night, and that I was gonna play some snooker, he had no qualms about it. Like I said appreciate the responses and I feel dumb about it

But once more, what happened happened. My action could have resulted in a bad situation becoming worse. Though luckily it didnt, but perhaps my actions got a message across to all the non mannered folks in our area.

If not. Oh wellll it happens like forrest gump says :)

Man, I'd have just pulled out my Uzi and sprayed those *****es. Then ran out. Fact: 'They' would never shark me again after that:D
