i bought a SW off Roy of Indy Cues around 2006. He lived in Indiana and has died in 2017 . After buying that I put my name on the list at SW. At the time the rumor was about a 4 year wait. It took many years before Laurie contacted me by Email. I never thought it would happen. Filled out the form and got the cue. She told me that she keeps the orders in a file. Problem is people move, change their email address. phone numbers and etc. Sometimes they are no longer interested or have the money. I bet it was at least 10 years before I got the call.

At that time I also put my name on Hercek‘s list. Never received a call.

What does a Southwest cue do that some other brand doesn't? .... they are definitely not very unique looking.... most seem like they are built from a standard design pattern ... same rings.... same look ... why wait 18 years to buy one? chasing nostalgia? i was at a poolhall and looking at one a while back and played with a few games with it .... now i am even more bewildered ... i would rather play with a nice sneaky pete with a good shaft for less than $1k .... i definately wouldnt pay a couple thousand+ for a southwest and have to wait 18 years for it .....
It's not really about that. It's more in the same class as buying a Patek or a Rolex. generally they hold their value or go up in value, that's why people buy them imo. If it's worth waiting almost 20 years, I would say no, but then again it's free to sign up.

my wife and I have both. We bought them from this site:

Seriously we do have the real deal of both brands. Patek are very difficult to get and Rolex are available. To get either one you have to now be a previous buyer for the Patek or a good customer for the Rolex. They don't want to sell to flippers. There are reliable sites that do sell previously owned watches.

is one

Don’t buy from any site that sells watches that have the serial numbers ground off .

Do they still let you buy two when your name comes up?
I heard they changed that a few years back or so. Now, I believe it's only one cue per year per person.

I'm just going to put this out there up front, I've never owned a Southwest. And I'm not on the list because I don't need any more cues than I already have. But I really don't know why anyone really looks at it like they're waiting 18+ years for a cue. It's not like waiting for an insurance check so you can have your house rebuilt or sitting in a reception room waiting to see a doctor. You basically spend 10 minutes or so calling to put your name on the list with zero money down then go about your life. You might get the call or email one day. You might not. Either way, life goes on and your entire investment was a 10 minutes phone call.

I received 2 in 2023, but I ordered 2 when I got on the list in 2006.

I wonder why they never expanded or found a way to increase their production. Their cues are so simple compared to other high end cues.

According to a response I got from a post back in November of '23, Southwest stopped the two cues per year thing "years ago."

Based on what I've seen in my industry, they understand the difficulty of increasing production while maintaining their expected level of quality. I also feel they have an "it ain't broke so don't fix it" situation going on. I mean, they seem to be getting by just fine doing things the same way now that they were doing them 25 years ago. And more isn't always better.

Not owning a SW cue, but I have played with one in the past. What does a new SW cost vs the secondary market? Are people waiting knowing they will get instant equity in the cue? They can flip it for a profit? How much? Just curious, because changing your playing cue after 20 years will be difficult no matter how well it hits.

I have 4 SW style cues, but they all have 3/8 x10 joint pins:
  • Carmeli with cocobolo and burl points (3 low, 3 high), leather wrap
  • Jim Pierce with thuya burl and ebony points (3 low, 3 high), leather wrap
  • unplayed Carmeli with maple and ebony points (3 low, 3 high), leather wrap
  • Schmelke bacote merry widow, leather wrap
If you are looking for a 3/8 x 11 pin with or without points, I would go with one of these:

That's a nice collection. I don't see a JW. Shirley the JW on the butt cap would be showing if you had one. 👍
Thanks, a JW is on the list to obtain. I will find one that fits my fancy at a good price one of these days. My problem, if you can call it a problem, is that my wife and daughter both play. It makes it hard to sneak a new cue into the collection. I got busted about 5 months ago when I brought home a Andy Gilbert/ Willie Hoppe conversion and tried to get by without mentioning it. The wife spotted it right away. One positive in the deal is that my daughter knows what I have in the collection and appreciates cues. No worries about them finding a good home when I am gone.

In the mid 80s Bill Webb went to Vegas to tour Jerry Franklin's shop. There was an open door policy at Southwest Cues at that time. While there Bill ordered three cues. All three high and three low six point cues. Cost at that time was $275 each. Bill came home to Seattle and waited for the cues. He got two in the mail in less than two months. In an additional two months the third cue had not shown up. Impatient Bill called Jerry and canceled the third cue. One of the regulars at the 211 Club tried to buy one of the two cues. Bill was not easy to deal with. He wouldn't give you a price. Make him an offer. If it was not enough the was then not for sale at any price. Barry offered him $450 and Bill sold it to him. To this day Barry owns this cue along with many other collectable cues.

While I am lusting.... friend had a McDermott with ivory joint ivory ferrule and leather wrap that they made for Him. It too was oh so sweet. The obscenity was that he paid 250. It was just cruel to tell me what he paid for it. I thought we were friends. 🤷‍♂️ 😉
Definitely not a McDamit....Definitely not....
