Specs on Dale Perry Cues

I'm probably gonna buy one of these dp cues on ebay. I realize that a lot of people's cues got devalued when he started selling on ebay, but aside from that, what do people think about the quality of his recent cues? I see that he changed from uniloc joints and stainless radial pins to a brass joint pin. Does anyone have one of these brass-pinned dale perry's? How do you think it plays? I was also really hoping to know what the balance point of the cue is and how much the shaft weighs...balance is really important to me. I realize that one cue could be very different in these specs depending on the wood used, but would still very much like to know. Any other info on recent dale perry's would be appreciated. Thanks

I've played with two in the past year, both bocote & ebony with that big brass radial. They hit very solid. I think the quality is very nice too. I got a couple off eBay for some teammates & could have scalped them for easily double what I paid, but I hook my friends up too much...

As far as the balance point, I have no idea. Never measured it but it felt very balanced to me.

I just bought a DP cue to use as my league player and I'm very happy with it. It is a radial pin and though I can't give you a balance point in inches, it does seem balance neutral (neither forward or butt heavy). The build/finish quality seems good, it hits solid but not overly stiff, and I really have no complaints for the price.

The tip that came on it was a LePro I believe, and if yours was anything like mine you'll probably want to swap that out.

You can't go wrong for the money. As a matter of fact, I'm getting Dale to build a custom for me. It's going to cost more than his ebay cues, but for the design I want the other cuemakers are outta my range. And I don't plan on selling it so the re-sell value don't bother me. I have owned many DP cues over the last 5 years and never had a problem like many on AZ.

Can't comment on that new brass radial pin but I bought a Dale Perry with a stainless radial pin a few years ago. I also bought a used McDermott I-3 shaft here on the forum. A terrific combination. The balance is perfect and it really plays well. For the price, it can't be beat.

I've bought 3 DPs over the last 5 years and I think he makes a hell of a cue for the price.

Realizing that the balance point will vary based on shaft diameter and weights added to the butt, I just checked 2 that I own.

One is a 21 oz with a 12.5 mm. shaft. The balance point is 1.5 inches above the wrap or 18.5 inches from the butt tip.

The other is a 19 oz cue with a 13 mm. shaft (I think this is his stock size and weight) and the balance point is an inch closer to the joint.

Neither of these are the brass pin you describe so your mileage may vary.

Dale/ Eddie Taylor's Rambow,,,,,,,

Let me go on record here as to testify about Dale Perry,,,,,he built an extra shaft for Mr. Eddie Taylor's 1961 Rambow which I own,,,,

The thing plays lights out !!!

Dale told me that he wasn't even interested in working on Mr. Taylor's cue as he put it...''What if I put in on the lathe and it goes poof""

Great and honest guy,,,,one hell of a cue maker,,,,,,,if it's good enough for the late great Mr. Taylor,,,it's good enough for me,,,,,,

Thanks again Dale,,,,,,,,,,Alan ,,,,,,,,,,

I picked up a DP ebay cue about 3 weeks ago and it plays phenomenally. There are lots of pros and only a few cons I can think of.

Pros

Plays VERY solid, great hit to it
Great look (i was at a tournament on saturday and had a few different people asking my opponent what kind of stick i was using)
amazing price
Unlike most ebay cues, he will turn the shaft to your specifications and adjust the weight for free
great balance (18oz stick advertised, haven't weighed it though), and the balance is right before the wrap meets the forearm (on the wrap side).

Cons

The joint is SLIGHTLY off, by maybe .5mm, i play with the cue on my chin a lot, and i can feel the lip of the joint. it doesn't bother me especially, I'd just make sure to request he check this for me if i buy another cue from him.
The shaft doesn't have an insert, it's just threaded wood. I don't know if that is for a more pure hit, or if it's just a cost saving measure. but it does mean I won't let anyone put the stick together other than me. I don't want it cross threaded.

All in all it's a great cue for the money, I probably spent 2 weeks window shopping his sticks on ebay before I found one I really liked. Some of his designs are a bit funky, and I wanted a more conservative, traditional stick.

Good luck either way!

I checked on Ebay, and he is still using Uni-Loc Radials. Where did you see a brass joint pin Dale Perry?

He uses both steel and brass. Brass is a tad heavier than steel so its used for balance purposes, I would think.
Fantastic cue and player for the money.
I just measured my wife's for you.
Purpleheart forearm with a PH butt sleeve. Brass radial pin.
19" balance point exactly to the rear of the butt cap.

Stainless steel sleeve over phenolic joint. Depending on the weight of the shot, you can hear that nice tink sound. I like that sound, I don't care what.
With the phenolic joint, its not a soft hit but not overly stiff either. Somewhere nice in the middle, but hit is subjective. Thats what I feel.

Oh, and the big pins into wood, thats not a cost saving measure, thats for pure hit Bud. Once you get into the big pins, theres no going back as far as I'm concerned. 3/8thx10 or radial pin, beautiful!

I have 2 and my wife has one. We've owned many more but people keep buying them. The nice thing is, is that they all play very consistent. You can play with one and pick up another. Your game won't change.

dale perry

i have a beautiful DP for sale just cause a had a new custom cue made!!!plus extra peditor shaft i use water buffalo tips on my cues!!

I have 4 Dale Perry cues, one with a brass pin. Last cue I ordered had wrong size shaft and was 1/2 oz over weight ordered. When I contacted Dale Perry his abrupt reply was "Send it back if you don't like it".

I have one I bought about a month ago 19oz,13mm tip, very well balanced nice player. joints line up good, no complaints.

ive owned three DP cues and honestly think they play as well as any other cue on the market. there are some questions about the true one of one issue he puts on his cues, but to me i really dont care. I currently own one of the ebay specials that is beautiful, with malachite and ebony, and have an older one that is, in my opinion, the best looking cue he has ever built. i sold the very first one i bought only because another local player offered me double what i paid for it. for the money, you will not find a better custom cue. ive seen some of the other ebay cues, and no, the fit and finish may not be absolutely perfect, but they are still nice looking none the less. and if some jerk off is eyeballin yer cue that close he needs to be smacked anyways. just my two cents. enjoy whatever cue you chose!

I play in the same weekly APA 9-ball league as Dale so I see him every week. I've also been to his shop many times and when he found out I was into woodworking, he was kind enough to give me a full tour of his shop and explain how and why he does what he does with his business. I won't go any further into that. He's an honest guy who; at times can be a little abrasive with people he doesn't know, but he tells it like it is. He recently made a very nice cue for a girl on my team who wanted a new cue for her birthday. It's a gorgeous curly maple into beautiful cocobolo front and coco butt sleeve with maple and ebony inlays. It has the brass pin. The cue is a very solid playing and well balanced cue. Not in the stiff category by any means but very solid. As has been said here before, you can't beat his cues for the money. He puts out some real nice cues because he's got a ton of beautiful wood.

I just bought a DP ebay. The shaft nicks very easily.I pick up some light dings every time I use it....and I'm very careful with it. I'm thinking about changing the shaft. The pin is brass. It is not a standard size thread. Does anyone know what will fit onto a DP ebay cue with a brass pin. Thanks.
