I got a call this evening from a bar that I visited about 3 weeks ago saying I'd won £1200! Turns out I'd won the monthly speed pool there.

I'd never been to the bar before but me, my girlfriend, my brother and his wife decided to go out for lunch one day and set off driving. We found ourselves in a sports bar about 100 miles away. They had a montly speed pool game advertised throughout the bar so me and my brother decided to give it a go. £5 entry for 3 tries. Aim of the game? Rack all 15 balls, break then the time starts as soon as you hit the CB after the break. Pocket all the balls in the least amount of time. All the entry fees get put into a prize fund that's paid out every 4 weeks. My winning time was 42 seconds if I remember right. I thought nothing of it at the time, I just assumed someone would come along and beat it.

You guys should give it a go. Its amazing that this paid more than most amateur tournaments. I can see how it does though, its really addictive trying to beat the quickest time. Once I call them back and find out where the bar is exactly I might make a nice little monthly earner from it ;)
 
For how ridiculous it looks, it really is a lot of fun. I think our APA regional usually has a table set up at one of the booths for it. Can't remember for sure.
 
I think speed pool is a fun game to beat opponents for time.
The only drawback I can see is that it can instill a jab stroke.

Haha yeah, I even remember what I had for lunch! A rather undercooked burger with charcoal for fries. It was in a strange town to me but when we walked in we saw about 15 9 footers! Quite the rarity here. It was just about worth the risk of food poisoning :)

Hey Pidge ... you better hope they don't see your restaurant review before you get paid or you might have trouble collecting. :p

Errr...I probably should edit that!

Did I mention the food was excellent? The burger was cooked to perfection. And the fries, where do I start? They weren't over cooked one bit! Utter perfection in fries making by the "chef?"

They should stick another £100 on the prize for that review ;)
 
I want to say if I remember right the record from Dave Pearson is 23.5 seconds...someome can correct me if this is wrong. I don't know if there is a video of it somewhere or not but would love to see it. I got 2nd in VNEA in Mankato, MN when I was 19 in speed pool having never heard of it or tried it before. I still got the trophy at home as it was one of my best memories from pool growing up. We had a great time on that trip and Dave Pearson and Tom Rossman were both great ambassadors for the game.

That's friggin' insane! 23.5 seconds? That's a whole lot of ecstasy and red bull + a whole lot of skill. If anyone knows of a video I'd love to see it. Was it on a 9 footer? I can't imagine going under 40 seconds. My time was after I made 4 off the break, which is rare for me, especially on what was an 8 ball rack.
 
This is what I heard....I would assume it was a barbox and that 4-5 at least were made on the break for this to be possible. This was a long time ago that this was mentioned to me keep in mind.

It might be 26.5 not 23.5 now that I try to rack the brain thinking that far back that I heard this (15 years ago).... regardless it sounds like it was unbelievably fast from the sounds of it.
 
I snapped a shaft in half playing that game in my basement...F'n pole. I was flying around like Obiwan, then turned the wrong way....SNAP.:eek:

Turns out it was in Sheffield...wtf?

Not quite 100 miles away but it felt like we were driving a good 2 and a half hours. I only know how to get to the crucible and Rileys in sheffers so I'm not quite sure where it was. Its called The Common Room. Quite studenty, but it was worth it just for the cheap pool. There may have been more than 15 actually. I could see atleast 15 and I could hear people playing in a seperate room. That's all they had, 9ft tables. I was in heaven :)

I think 42 seconds is great...pretty sure it wins some speed contests.
Salvas won a world title one year...I recall last try being in the 50s.

I was urged to try it once...not my bag...:embarrassed2:
..at 2.5 minutes, I gave up with a few balls still left....
....knocked a lotta dust off the rails, though.:rolleyes:
