Splinterhands...the Next Teacherman?

Since the Splintered One saw fit to prominently display his opinion in the thread title, I thought it only fitting to respond in kind. I've always thought that less confrontation is always better. I personally agree with SJM's post in the original thread. I very much appreciate Grady's input on this forum, and I think his knowledge of the game is definitely unequalled (anywhere including the "Ask the Pro's" sub-forum). Everyone goes off occasionally, and last time I checked, its a free country. I appreciate everyone's opinion, even Splinterhands - its also my prerogative to disagree.

vBookie??

Some people just feel that it is their perogative to throw gas on every fire they can.

I agree, they have their "rights"*....but I don't think it endears them to anyone in doing so.

*right to free speech doesn't apply to a "public" message board that is actually Private property. Censorship in any form managment sees fit, is perfectly legal in this regard.

Mr.W,
Exactly correct, you can pick out the gasoline throwers a mile away.

As a point of clarification, the right to free speech does apply everywhere - it just means you can't be prosecuted for it. As you correctly point out, the nature of the forum makes it possible for the management to freely do whatever they wish with their forum after you freely speak(again with no threat of prosecution).

I know several constitutional lawyers that are appalled by the censorship of the public airwaves, believing it to be completely unconstitutional - I think I agree (if I was smarter I would definitely try to figure it out).

Of course this is a national kinda thing, eh ? Just recently one of our local community/national leaders was punished for what he said, he also lost his Order of Canada. So there are places where speeches are not so free. Also, "free speech" may not be a defense in certain civil matters, in Canada, the US, and many other places. All in all, we've got pretty good rights in Canada and the US, imo, regardless of where Howard Stern has to go to be heard.

Dear WillieBlowMore,
Thanks so much for starting a thread about me. I'm honored. You must be one of the groupies sailing on the constantly shifting Grady public opinion boat. I'm glad you can make your own opinions and stand by them.

DaveK,
You are correct. We are free to speak, and our boss is free to fire our ass if he doesn't like it. I just wish the government wasn't playing "boss" so often.

All in all the system works fairly well; to repeat Winston Churchills famous quote, "Democracy is the worst form of government there is... except for all the others."

Splinterman,
I'm DEFINITELY a fan of Grady's (groupie may be a little harsh, but possible if you are considering a few female rock stars) - no shift of opinion here. Anyone that has read his book will realize Grady has a few, self-acknowledged flaws. Who doesn't?? I'll post my response from the previous thread for those that missed it:

Its possible you misunderstand the motives of many of the posters. We are in an EXTREMELY attractive position, given the state of the game. We are fanatics who, through the miracle of the internet, have access to the thoughts of the pro's - who have mastered the game we pursue so avidly.

When a pro goes off, most of us are willing to cut them slack (especially when they apologize); because THEY ARE CONTRIBUTING TO OUR PASSION FOR THE GAME. When posters come on here and hassle the pro's, many of us object - we don't want the pro's to pack up and go home. Will we cut them more slack than we do you or me??? Damn right.

I also wonder about your assessment of Grady's level of expertise. I've met and discussed pool with at least 5 players who have been world champions (recent and remote), and personally know several pro's. Who do I think knows more about pool than anyone I've met??? Grady Mathews, Danny DiLiberto, and SJM. I doubt any current player is even close. Let's cut them some slack and learn something about the game - knowledge of the game doesn't die with loss of your eyesight and reflexes. As long as these guys have enough eyesight and reflexes to allow them to type on the internet, I will continue to read their contributions.
