Spot shot update...

After I watched the Youtube videos of the spot shot with no rail about 10 times each, I had it in my mind perfectly, so.....

I go to Jay Helferts friends house here in Vegas today and after hitting the balls for 5 minutes I remembered I needed to try the spot shot with no rail, Jay was watching me-I was hitting the balls pretty good, The 9' table has 4 1/8" pockets they barely take 2 balls. The cloth was well used 860-but not worn out, table played good no rolls etc.

I set up the shot shooting right to left-which is harder for me. I got down on the shot and felt great I slow rolled it, the ball the 6 I think, the 6 rolls into the pocket with a little speed, not dead weight, the cue ball just died, it was 1/8" short of 5 balls off the rail!!!!! I squeezed the 5 balls inbetween the rock and the rail and the rock moved up 1/8" to fit the 5 balls, about a diamond off the back rail on my first time, I didnt try it again. Jay watched it. I couldnt believe I hit it so good, probably cause I watched the videos so many times I had it in my head.

I was somewhat disappointed when I finally tried this shot, as I hit it good my first 2 tries (didn't leave the CB 5 widths off the rail tho!). Now I just settle for the vicarious thrill of telling other people about the shot and watching their reaction. :-)

I, too, tried it last night.

After playing for about 1-hour, I remembered the jerk who claimed it was a hoax, at least indirectly.

So, ball on spot, I shoot it, and DAM! ball rolled off line. Tried it again. Same result. My speed was good, just a crappy table I was on.

So I went to the other side of the kitchen. Much to my disappointment, it took my 6 tries to make it! Deep shelf, hung it twice. BUT! But once I made it, I then made it 3 times in a row.

Whitey was about 1" from hitting the rail, except on my 3rd and final shot. I hit it a little thin so the CB rolled up just a c-hair off the rail. But never hit it.

This was a standard 9 ft GC III, with relatively new Simonis on it. I shot it from the edge of the kitchen (100% inside), about 3/4" off the rail.

So to the Doubting Thomas out there - you were wrong! If you still can't make this shot... well, um, gee, wanna match up??

I'm guessing it's a light cue ball. Still, I've never seen the cue ball stop that far from the cushion. One other possibility was you had a small skid which will tend to take the follow off the cue ball.

I too made the shot. Second try the cb stopped about 1/2 ball from the rail. Good enough for me. Move on to important drills.

Centennial balls and a blue circle cue ball. it wasnt a cheap light CB but it reacted like on on that shot, it didnt skid, i hit it perfect-better than I expected to. I knew I was good when I got down to shoot, however not that good. WOW

Yes, good for you and several suggesting low side english> I'm thinking do these guys even play pool. Someone suggested a C and below players forum. I think it already is at times.

TRUE STORY! I was standing right there, and Eric hit the shot super good. The object ball just barely trickled to the pocket, in fact I didn't think it was going to go, but it hung and dropped. The cue ball just rolled to a stop a good diamond off the rail, and I said "man you hit the ball good."

I didn't even want to try it after that. But we did play a little banks on that very tight Vitalie table. The first game Fatboy got to watch me make five quick banks, like in three innings. The second game I relaxed a little, my automatic stall speed set in. I had Eric 3-1 and coasted a little. He got to two and made the third bank but scratched. I couldn't carry him any longer and was forced to end this MISMATCH. :)

too bad Jay can only speak part truth ;) i dont think he is lieing he is just old and has mild dimensia and forgets things, but I still love him, he can remember how to play...a little.

While it is true I hit the spot shot as good as any player ever could,

He isnt accurate in his recollection of our bank pool game, he did run over me the first game,,,,BUT in the second game I had him weak and missing, I caught a couple bad rolls and he stole the game, then insisted we go eat....he knew that I had him weak and ended the game, he did a god job of managing his game-quiting before I drilled him, he is running weak now and this morning i'm gonna put a beating on him, i'll try the spot shot again, i hope I get 4 balls from the rail.

Stall? Isnt it great I have convinced that he thinks he is stalling. I'm in a sweet spot now.

Talk about ironic. I stopped by a Used Book Store the other day looking for old billiard books and ran across the book by Ray Martin; 99 critical shots in pool.

Anyway, I flipped it open and what page do you think that it opened to??? I think it was a shot pictured somewhere in the 50' of the shots and it was shooting the spot shot..

Ray showed it as getting position on a ball down on the head rail. He stated that it gets shot with a "drag draw" shot.

I always shot it soft like you did FatBoy. weird though.
