Spray Methods...

I've read alot about different spraying booths and methods of spraying. Some say you HAVE to have a spray booth with explosion proof fan and plenty of ventilation. Some say you can hold the cue, spray it then hang it up to dry.

My question is, if you use the hold and spray method, what are the down sides to spraying outside and bringing inside to hang? Anyone use this method?

Thanks,
Zim

From my experience the down side of spraying outside and bringing inside to hang is all kinds of things. Between small bugs that can get in the clear, dust in the air, walking the cue inside can cause a sag in the clear from all the movement. I actually know a cue maker that rubs automotive clear with a foam paint brush while the cue is rotating about 100-150 rpms and adds coats in 15 min. intervoles. He's done it this way for years. But having a controled enviroment is always best. Lots of cue makers have a clean room where they do all their clear work and this eliminates any chance of dust of any thing getting in your clear

Where I live I aggree with Joe, the bugs pollen dust and what ever you can think of would make It impossible for me to hang stuff outside. I don't have a spray booth yet either, but something I have been doing lately, is I have a small utility room attached to an open carport, the door between the 2 has a insert I can open to let the fumes out. I hang the cue near the door from a hook in the ceiling with a piece of string and a clasp that open and closes. If I'm spraying the shaft at the same time, then I use one of those rubber shaft hangers for straightening, to hold the cue by the ferrule, and attach it to the clasp in the ceiling, then wind the string up so it spins, and spray up to where the finish ends on the shaft. It only spins for a short period of time unless you keep spinning It by hand in the procces, but the finish I'm using at the time flashes really quickly anyway, so I have had no issue with sagging yet. I wear a mask, and clear the room in between coats as to stay out of the fumes as much as possible. I have put ca on the way Joe mentioned, but have not tried It with urethane. That sounds like something I might try if able to keep the fumes down.

i was thinking of building something similar to this out of ply wood and a regular sheet of glass so i can scrape it clean with a razorblade when the over spray gets bad and using a dust collector right off the back and probably mount a light in it along with a dead center that would have a hand crank going to a adjustable tailstock.

but now im thinking of building it around my wood lathe so i can just turn it on and dedicate to spraying.

mainly im just thinking out loud here

Making a spray booth from wood is not that hard.
You should consider something that will rotate at least one butt and two shafts.

Here is a photo of the simple set up I have.

It is built in a small storage shed with the fumes vented outside using an old furnace blower.

Willie- Nice looking spray booth! That's something similar to what I've been designing. I already have a spray booth w/exhaust, but don't have it set up to rotate or hold cues- just a big box!

Looks good!

Willee,

Is that hard hat there to keep the overspray out of your hair?

Outside finishing - bad idea

Hi,

If you go outside you have to have the right temperature for the clear coat you are using. There is a 15 degree range for PPG for example. I have been refining my finishing for 5 years and the biggest factor for improvement I found was staying in the temperature range. Same goes for working with epoxy for seal coating steps.

Datum, That is a deluxe booth you got there.
Love the pool balls on the ends.

I notice you are using a HPLV setup.
I tried one first but did not get the nice fine mist I like.
Got a lot of fish eyes also.
More compact than a conventional spray system.

they are miniture pool balls 1.5" I purchased them off ebay about 4 years ago thinking they were 2.25" seller did not disclose size I finally found something to use them for.

And the look on his face, hes thinking, I should have used Poly.
Now I have to shave 5 times a day and I have cravings for bananas.
