Squirt, swerve, and throw...

While not playing for position, to safely make a long 45 degrees left cut-shot I use:

  • Center hit

    Votes: 23 21.1%
  • Center Draw

    Votes: 6 5.5%
  • Center Follow

    Votes: 35 32.1%
  • Right English

    Votes: 13 11.9%
  • Right-draw English

    Votes: 14 12.8%
  • Right-follow English

    Votes: 8 7.3%
  • Left English

    Votes: 4 3.7%
  • Left-draw English

    Votes: 1 0.9%
  • Left-follow English

    Votes: 0 0.0%
  • I like to watch 'American Idol'

    Votes: 5 4.6%

On long shots, it is too hard for me to judge how much english will take; usually quite a bit at slow speeds. I try to avoid english on long shots. Sometimes, of course, some draw or follow will help avoid a scratch.
 
I'm not fimiliar with this "not playing for position" situation, but I suppose low-right will give me the most predictable results...

Not actually drawing the ball, but enough to get a nice tangent and spin the cue around in fimiliar territory.

Not to change the subject on your original post, but you should always play position. Even if you are shooting the last ball (whether it be the 9 in 9-ball, or 8 in 8-ball).

And here is why: you need to visualize the whole shot. If the shot is not complete, you might get something wrong, like the speed,. If you are using side spin. there's a good chance that the change in speed will cause a miss.

Also you may as well play to leave the cue ball safe, and you must play to not scratch.
