I think a dead center ball hit introduces its own independant chances of skid, cue ball to cue tip, which could instantly throw it off a little before it ever reached the object ball. Sometimes those hits kind of "thud". I would opt for either a slightly above center medium speed rolling shot that allowed the cue ball normal roll, or drag draw firm with a touch of outside.
Thats on the 45 degree shot, if you took most all of that angle away where it was nearly straight in and long, I like an ever so slight touch of inside low to help avoid unwanted throw by not cueing the ball dead center. The slight inside (and I do mean slight) gives me a concious focus not to throw a long shot by mistake.
