St Louie Louie Feature Film

For a while now I have had an idea in the back o' me head for a pool centric movie.

It would not be like any other pool movie you've seen but I think it's a great idea that would sell to the general public with the right casting. I keep meaning to flesh it out and register the idea with the WGA. There's even a retired LA screenwriter I see at the pool hall regularly that I think I could work with...

I am such a slug.

Lou Figueroa

Seems like a genuine question so I'll give you a genuine answer: Louie had some drug addictions and suffered greatly as an alcoholic, like many others in that era. His story and untimely death demonstrate the effects of drugs and drinking on the human soul. This is a sobering, family message disguised as a pool hall drama. The audience will fall in love with Louie because of his humor, his gift of gab, his savant-like skill and passion for the game of pool. Will it scare people away from pool? No, it will promote pool and billiards with a fun and interesting genius character and then scare people away from drugs and alcohol.
Thanks for your prompt, interesting and sincere reply.

Being some two decades younger than Louie Roberts, I don’t know much about him but the name definitely rings a bell. A documentary would be interesting, but then again you could say the same for most pool players.

A quick search found these videos:

Keith's journey in life is an interesting one for sure. Like this movie topic and the recent movie "Break," the pool purists and pool know-it-alls will come out of the woodwork and condemn it before it gets started.

One needs a thick skin to be in the movie business, I think. :)
And good grief, there are a lot of incredibly good movies that never get large scale public recognition or the dollas that follows.

Tough game to get into.

make that 99.9999999999999999999% never heard of him :) we don't realized it but our pool world is very small as far as famous players being known to the general public
Less than that had ever heard of Rocky Balboa before Stallone wrote the script...

I agree with Maha. I was also approached about doing a movie re my father as he and his partner were colorful characters in the pool hall. They liked the fact that it was a haunting that led me to find my Dad and that my Mom's picture was in an Al Capone book. They thought they could do something with all that. Too stressful and the only ones making money off of it is the investors. Sandy Laube

Can I storyboard a sequence or scene?

I can enhance old video with computers and have editing software.

I am suppose to make a demo reel, I this project matches my interests and I have time for it.

I just want to be involved.

In case anyone hasn't seen it, here is the finished movie trailer ->

By the way, this is on a zero-dollar budget with ALL local non A-list actors and crew. Now, just IMAGINE what a production company could do on a real budget! The possibilities are limitless.

It is amazing, the shot selection, camera movement and the context.

Even the music is relaxed, not jumpy like TCOM.

you might be better off making a short you tube internet movie and trying to make some money off the hits.
and this way you can get your desire to have him out there satisfied.

to be blunt, your trailer is so weak no one would have any interest in this project except, justnum.

if this is your first endeavor go small so the failure doesn't wreck you and you can advance from there if you find viewers.
you never posted other movies you made and that were money makers so i guess that this is your first try.
good luck.

I agree with this 100%

To piggyback off of what everyone has already said, almost nobody outside of the pool world would know who Louie Roberts is. Heck, even most of the younger pool players would have absolutely no idea who he is. Besides that huge obstacle, you would have to really come with some great film making, and great acting to get even the slightest, smallest interest. And from the trailer provided, it's definitely not it.

I remember years ago, a small time film maker came on here and was taking pre orders for the "next, best pool playing movie!" He hyped it up so much, and let us all know that it would contain pro players as some of the actors. The problem with that? Pro pool players are not actors! The "movie" was horrible. From the quality of the filming, to the performance of the players.

It seems like every time someone tries to make a new pool movie, it fails miserably. Like others have said, you can have pool playing as a back story, and possibly make a decent film. But even then, so many movies and ideas have been tried over and over, with no success.

I wish the film maker all of the future success.
