Stacked leather vs leather vs linen

Hi all,

Thought this would be a great place to ask this question. I'm thinking of changing my wrap to either conventional leather or stacked leather from irish linen and I'm curious what the physical changes will be to the butt(mostly weight). And if I choose to swap to either of the leathers and then decide that they are not for me, can I return to a linen wrap without any issues or is there a deeper groove cut to accomodate the leathers?

Any insight is appreciated.

a deeper groove is cut out for leather.....
 
I would never consider anyone to wrap my cue if they said they needed to make the wrap groove deeper. Changing the integrity of the cue so as to accommodate an inferior piece of leather should never be attempted. In years past softer, thicker leather was used very effectively but as times have moved on and cue handles have become so much slimmer so has the leather. They just can't be so thick and bulky as the cue can only be so thin without changing it's stiffness and playability. If a cue maker thought his basic parameters for a cue were wrong he would have designed it differently.

Changing the wrap groove depth a few thousandths of an inch is no big deal. Some choose to do this with various leathers, some choose to sand or split the leathers to exact size. But there is no need to change the wrap groove at all with stack wrap as it is cut and sanded to correct thickness once it is put on the cue.

My advice is to go with the stacked leather wrap. The wrap groove should not be changed. If your cue guy wants to cut on you cue.....run
Make sure you know what you are wanting for a finish/feel. Smooth and polished, or more of a chamois - raw leather feel.
Go for it with an experienced cuemaker, and you will be happy.
 
Thanks for the advice everyone, very much appreciated. My local cue guy said that he wasn't able to do standard leather(first clue) and that he would have to cut a deeper grove for the stacked leather(second clue). The final tip off came when the price for a simple refinish and wrap came in at almost $450 and I would be limited on my choices.

Sounds like you need a new cue guy.

I agree completely, unfortunately my area is severly limited in that regard which is probably why he thinks he can charge this much and get away with it. I'd rather have my cue slightly dinged up and in need of a refinish than let someone hack it up and fleece me in the process.
 
I have a suggestion:

Send it to someone who knows what they are doing and can give you what you want without damaging your cue.

He will take very good care of you. There are many others, but that's the one that comes to mind today.
