Staples vs. Glue

I'm curious as to how you guys feel about gluing the cloth to the Slate as opposed to using staples. I have always felt that using adhesive was taking a shortcut and usually done to save time without regard to quality. I have used adhesives only when covering a table where the Slate had no wood backing.
Most of the tables that I've seen, with glued on cloth, have seemed fine throughout the life of the cloth.
Opinions?

i have always stapled the framed slate and glued the unframed slate....
some on here use glue only and appear to do a good job .....

but be careful if you dont agree with the powers that be you will be called a hack and nothing you do will be acceptable

You can't wear out the backing with glue. You run staples into wood enough times, you end up having to either glue it on now, or rebuild the back to replace the parts that are so eaten up that there isn't much left to work with.
Get good glue, it holds as well if not better, than staples, and extends the life of those parts of your table.
I use both, but glue is the way to go if you have the right stuff, and can do it right.
And you don't get the striations on worsted cloth with glue that you do from splitting fibres and seams with staples. (Smoother, better quality finished product that you can stretch tighter.)
But, super 77 isn't what you are looking for with those stretches, as it won't handle the load without pulling off if you have any gumption in your stretches.Scotch grip neutral 10 is the ticket.
Good times!

And yes I know that we should be getting some of the early bird to discuss a couple of those last sentences.... I just couldn't resist.lol

so I guess you are saying the way some people put staples into the pocket areas is bad?

Nope.
Just figured that since we've all had this talk so many times in the past, that I would just throw out enough for the controversy to come back in and see who is/was awake when they read it.....lol
I put staples in the pockets. Hence the whole " I use both"part, but every once in a while I like to leave just enough unsaid to get somebody wound up! lol
Makes me feel better over coffee in the morning.
But to be honest, I thought this thread was already dead, that's why I posted the link to the last conversation about it.

pesonally think staples are better if you can do it. like it was said you get a much better quality and tighter stretch. unframed has to be glued in most cases.

ummm...no, my gluing system is a hell of a lot stronger than staples on ANY kind of slate bed;) pool/billiards/snooker...don't matter!

Without tears, striations or waves in the bedcloth either I might add.
Well, on worsted, if you have those problems with regular rug, get a new supplier or a new job!

I agree with you on this one, for the most part. One exception, Glen's method is amazing, the best way I've seen to install the cloth. Jaw dropping how tight, even and sharp looking this system is. The tables play amazing. I use this system for all my commercial locations, Diamond Tables, and tables I build for serious players.

I've seen a method that beats glue or staples and is amazing in it's simplicity. Oh, and here is something for the nay-sayers to read:
Matthew 13 verses 12-17

Installing tack board strips to the sides of the slates to hold the cloth is a joke;)

Hey Glen,

I've been hearing about this "tack strip" retro-fit recently. The first time was from a room owner that I gave no credibility to, the second was from a mechanic that is a credible guy. I've never used or seen this "fix" on any table I've personally have worked on. It sounds as if you have... . For the record though, what are the aspects of this method that make it a joke.

Thanks in advance.
Jay
