steel bed for taig lathe?

Will they have the grooves milled in the bottom for the standard u channel? If so I am interested also.

I hadn't planned on milling the u channel slots in the bottom of the beds. Is this absolutely necessary ? If so I guess we can put those slots in there too which is just another process. I don't want to have so much time in these that nobody wants to pay the price for them.. This is what I am figuring for cost. Is this acceptable to everyone ? I want to make it affordable and available for anyone that wants one.

48" w/slots $205.00, no slots $175.00
60" w/slots $230.00, no slots $200.00
72" w/slots $255.00, no slots $225.00

These prices will be + shipping. I have tubes here that I won't have to charge for. I will get some shipping prices in the next few days and post them as well.

I'm planning on having the material early next week to get these rollin. None of the local suppliers stock the 4140PH that they will be made out of.

Thanks,

Great idea, might as well put into production a 1.4" bore steel headstock, Chuck, tailstock, cross slide, and tool posts as well:thumbup: I'd be first in line for one of those:D

That's a great idea. I wish there was something out there like that right now.

steel bed for taig

I'm also interested in a 48" or maybe a 60". I am in Portland Or. and would like to know shipping cost as well.
Thanks for producing these!!

Saving on shipping

We do not know each other but, I think, shipping together would work provided that we contact each other and agree to it. I will send a PM to him.

Price Update

Well, I have a price update! I just received a phone call from my supplier and the quote they gave me on the material was not correct. So basically they gave me a price, I ordered it, then they call and tell me oh yeah, well the cost just went up about 25%. Kind of shady really, but what can I do!

Its not going to make a huge difference in the cost, basically about $30.00 per bed over what I quoted before. I'm sorry guys, I wish it was possible to make these for cheaper, but it is what it is I guess. Maybe this is why nobody has ever produced these. The good thing is these beds should last pretty much forever. The light work that gets done on these taig based lathes shouldn't even mar the surface of a 39 Rockwell.

I hope this doesn't change anyone's mind if they want to buy these or not as I have already ordered the material which was a $3500.00 investment.

Take my word for it though, I am not a shady person and I'm definitely not getting rich on these. But I have to make a few bucks and cover costs.

Thanks,
Geoff Dilley

I will say this much for Geoff. In my dealings with him he has always been upright and straight forward!

Geoff,

When you have a chance, perhaps you could relist your final pricing - the two numbers you gave "25%" and "$30" don't come close to matching.

Thanks!

Gary

No thanks, I'll leave it at what I said. Just because my cost of raw materials went up 25% does not make my selling price also go up 25%. The 2 sets of numbers are not proportionate to each other, so if you could please leave the business of the matter to me that would be great, but Thanks Gary!

I was just letting everyone know, trying to be upfront that the cost is going to go up a little bit over what I thought it was going to be. In the grand scheme of things its really not a huge up-charge, I'm trying to be as fair as I can with everyone.

I am trying to keep the cost down. The cost of rough machining did not go up 25%, the cost of grinding did not go up 25% so why should I raise the cost of the finished part 25% like you are inferring? If you would like to pay more than everyone else just let me know that when you place your order and I can charge you whatever you want to pay over the cost I charge everyone else! lol.. Thanks for the thought though, I understand what you're saying, but the 2 sets of numbers are not proportionate to each other.

Thanks, Geoff

Hey there... I am in the process of tooling up to make steel beds for the taig based lathes. They will be made out of pre-hard 4140. We are going to make 48" beds to start unless there is a demand for 60" or 72" beds.

Should be a couple weeks and I will have them ready to go. I can let you know though as soon as it's rollin!

Thanks, Geoff
Im interested too. Keep me posted once they started rolling.Been longing for that 60".

material

What is the progress on the taig steel lathe beds?

Still waiting on material to arrive. The supplier said a week to 10 days. I am hoping I will have it at the beginning of the week. As soon as I get it I will let everyone know!

Thanks, Geoff

Are these beds going to have the pre drilled and tapped mounting holes?

Are these beds going to have the pre drilled and tapped mounting holes?

I, for one, use 8020 as my bed support, so I wouldn't want to see them pre-drilled and tapped. Maybe as an option.

I will drill and chamfer the mounting hole for a 1/4-20 flat-head screw into a T-nut in the 8020 channel.

My 2 cents

Gary
