Steinway Billiards v. Buffalo Billiards: Meet the Real Hustlers!

Actually, I applaud the APA for this. For too many decades, pocket billiard lily-white right-wingers have discriminated against women and African Americans.

Because Cisero Murphy was African American in an era when there were racial tensions in the United States, he was not invited to compete in world title events until 1965, despite his skills as a player.

I actually remember a sign in the front of a pool hall in Petersburg, VIrginia, that said "No Women Allowed." I walked in, anyway, with my road partner Geese, though we didn't stay long. Everybody stoppod what they were doing when a female dared to walk into their sacred pool room.

'Bout time we see the face of pool being represented to look like America.

JAM, you know how much I like you. But those same signs, and those racial tensions were in very large, liberal cities across the US. Chicago, which has been run by liberals for 8 decades, that's all democratic mayors, including the entire city council, all the way down to the dog catcher. Yes, before PJ chirps in, there was one republican who made his way onto the city council for 2 or 4 years way back in the 90's. And yes, black families are doing just as bad in Chicago as decades past, maybe worse, with the rampant crime that has afflicted Chicago. So, folks can point to their fingers all they want, but it was not right wing policies that affect the black community being run by folks with liberal ideology.

The city of Chicago would NOT even allow "for sale" signs in your yard as a way to discourage blacks from moving to better neighborhoods. This practice has since stopped but was strong and in practice still in the 80's.

The civil rights act was passed by the following margins;

House;
Dems: 78%
GOP: 82%

Senate:
Dems: 73%
GOP: 94%

The bill was initiated by LBJ, but without an outpouring of support from the "right wingers", there was ZERO chance that this bill passes. Not only did they jump on board, but backed it more heavily then the dems themselves.

So, right wingers did NOT stop anyone from entering a store more than a liberal did back in the day. So, it was not about politics as much as it was about hate. Racism has no political party, just hatred.

I would get just as annoyed if you started blabbing about "Left-Wingers". I don't like politics in my pool, just like I don't put concrete in my coffee. They don't mix.

While I can appreciate your likes and dislikes, your tastes don't rule the forum. We each have likes and dislikes.

So how do you like your coffee? Black or white? Hope that's not too political for you.

Whatever the movement, it was a societal norm that blacks and women were not treated equally in the American pocket billiards world. I think we can all agree on that, right?

I like my coffee black and then I load it up with girl scout cookie creamer. You should try it sometime.

To keep this pool related - I just pocketed the nine in the side.

Absolutely, nor were the Japanese during WW2. But, it's not so easy to align based on political parties because of sound bites on the nightly news. Yes, blacks do vote democratic (90% or better) but it certainly does not mean the GOP are out to "get them". Heck, I wish liberal policies would actually help them, not hurt them, as it appears has been the case.

You stole that from me when I use to say I pocketed the nine in the corner to keep threads pool related :D lol.

Yup!

Every now and then, I'll pocket it in the corner, but that's another thread :killingme:

Now we're venturing into political territory. :grin-square:

Here, have an 8-ball with your coffee, just to keep it pool related. ;)

lol

politics in pool seem to be the norm. there is nothing wrong with that as in most things in life. pool players talking about politics in the real world is at best a joke. most don't even know how to align their own views properly with real world politics let alone vote.

So you're more into tea, I take it. :grin-square:

Here's a billiard tea set for those on the forum who want to have a tea party. :p

mike,

I think the video is good for pool. Just proves that the reality show did its job in creating a buzz strong enough to resonate with pool players whether pro or con. embrace it and hope it continues to spread and grow into bigger things. otherwise this game will still be played at the highest levels by people only able to live tournament check to tournament check or gambling session to gambling session. From what I have seen, doesn't look like a life you can retire on in the future.

Now you're talking. I drink an Arnie Palmer every morning. Though not quite 50/50, but like 80/20, with tea on the 80% side ;)

Helps me shoot good too (pool related)

The only thing that bothered me was after making the video and saying to get all of the stake horses together to bet what they wanted to....go on facebook and ask for less than $5000 for their mom who is having problems? If you have all this money to bet then help your mom instead of asking for help.

This could the next phase of the show, Pitting hall against hall, But I will tell you that Steinway has some shooters, they may seem a bit brash at times but the have some style and class, I don't know Buffalo at all, but my impression from the Video was that place needs a paint job, and the ending was extremely crude, flipping the finger may seem cute, or you meant it and that would mean the players at Buffalo have tendencies, I would be ascared to go to bathroom alone or else face a deliverance moment down in the deep south.

Willi,
First, I have to concede that the original video with the flip fingers at the end wasn't to my liking either. The "flipper" is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. I believe it was done with tongue in cheek and I never thought to ask him why he posed liked that. In the few years that I have known this young man, he has never uttered an unkind word to anyone. I think it was a youthful expression that he most likely wishes he had never expressed.

That video has been replaced with something much more palatable imo.

But just as equally important, you should never be scared to come to Buffalo Billiards in Metairie, LA unless you are a bigot. New Orleans is may be the epicenter of pool right now and if it is, it is because Buffalo Billiards is a melting pot, where people of different backgrounds come together to play and enjoy pool.

As to Steinway's players, I am sure they are top shelf! If I were to give TruTv's "The Hustlers" any advice it would be in the form of the photo below.

At least they have bathrooms down South. Go take a ride on the subway in New York City and enjoy the aroma. Instead of using bathrooms, they post signs letting you know where *not* to urinate. :embarrassed2:

The video

Actually, the video was posted after an extremely long thread that Erica started on her FB profile woofing at Emily Dudd and the whole crew in NY. The thread was started late in the evening and the very next day, that thread had been deleted. It was probably deleted because she was WAY out of line in calling people out of their names and a lot of other rubbish that she and others posted in the thread. I know that MikeyFrost saw that thread too. It was not long after that thread was deleted that the video was posted. If they want action, I am sure they could drive their happy asses up to NYC and get action without the online antics. It comes across very trailer trash/ghetto. Unfortunately, there is a big market for that in the U.S.

I am truly excited by Buffalo Billiards Video, they are thinking outside the box and may have a great Idea to help pool expand.
No I am not a bigot, Have been to LA. and enjoyed it, People were very friendly.
Yes the subways in NY can be a bit nasty, and don't recall seeing a bathroom in one.
From what I see in the video , there are some players there, the hall looks like its been there a while, and if I get back that way I will do my best to stop by.

Willi,
YOu won't need a chaperone if you visit Buffalos Billiards in Metairie, and hope that you will stop by when visiting the area.
