Actually, I applaud the APA for this. For too many decades, pocket billiard lily-white right-wingers have discriminated against women and African Americans.
Because Cisero Murphy was African American in an era when there were racial tensions in the United States, he was not invited to compete in world title events until 1965, despite his skills as a player.
I actually remember a sign in the front of a pool hall in Petersburg, VIrginia, that said "No Women Allowed." I walked in, anyway, with my road partner Geese, though we didn't stay long. Everybody stoppod what they were doing when a female dared to walk into their sacred pool room.
'Bout time we see the face of pool being represented to look like America. :smile:
JAM, you know how much I like you. But those same signs, and those racial tensions were in very large, liberal cities across the US. Chicago, which has been run by liberals for 8 decades, that's all democratic mayors, including the entire city council, all the way down to the dog catcher. Yes, before PJ chirps in, there was one republican who made his way onto the city council for 2 or 4 years way back in the 90's. And yes, black families are doing just as bad in Chicago as decades past, maybe worse, with the rampant crime that has afflicted Chicago. So, folks can point to their fingers all they want, but it was not right wing policies that affect the black community being run by folks with liberal ideology.
The city of Chicago would NOT even allow "for sale" signs in your yard as a way to discourage blacks from moving to better neighborhoods. This practice has since stopped but was strong and in practice still in the 80's.
The civil rights act was passed by the following margins;
House;
Dems: 78%
GOP: 82%
Senate:
Dems: 73%
GOP: 94%
The bill was initiated by LBJ, but without an outpouring of support from the "right wingers", there was ZERO chance that this bill passes. Not only did they jump on board, but backed it more heavily then the dems themselves.
So, right wingers did NOT stop anyone from entering a store more than a liberal did back in the day. So, it was not about politics as much as it was about hate. Racism has no political party, just hatred.
