stolen names in pool chat

I was playing around with IRC the other day trying to figure out how this was happening.

On IRC you can change your nickname to any nickname that isn't currently registered. So I could change my nickname to pooIpIayer or anything else as long as it isn't registered. You have to login with a registered nickname first then you can change it at will in IRC. I didn't notice that the L's were changed to I's. Thanks to Bob for noticing that.

Also you can register new usernames easily on ustream.

If your IP is banned you can just restart your modem and you'll get a new IP address within a minute or so.

Also there are proxy servers out there that allow you to get a different IP address and hide your location and IP address.

So I don't really see any way that you could permanently block a person unless you can somehow find out their real IP address and report them to their ISP.

I remember you changing usernames. It's easy and fast in IRC, it only takes a few seconds. You came "that close" to getting banned when watching you do it even before entering the room. We thought for a sec it was the spammer but after closer scrutiny we knew it was you and figured you just wanted to chill/remain in stealth.

As pertains to the "l" being changed to "i" -- I'm not the only one who noticed that -- and I'll just leave it at that

Nope.. don't even have clue who pocketbilliards is then. Which would then beg the question of why I would be a target. I rarely mod anywhere except for TAR. Like I say I'm rarely even in chatrooms. I rarely post anymore, rarely watch any streamed tourney's or rarely participate in chats. I'm too busy behind the scenes trying to contribute to pool in many different projects that I just don't have time anymore.

Nothing wrong with liking lunatics...unfortunately though since their actions are desperate cries for attention, even 1 positive comment can seem like 50 of them when everybody else hates them.

When you decide your going to act like a ass, rant and rave about about your own secret gay desires by pretending to talk about others, and disrupt the hard work that everyday people do to bring pool to us fans then your not going to be popular. This then leads to the greatly inflated significance of even a slightly positive remark by anybody. Humans are a interesting bunch

I think it is because you have an "l" in your username that can be easily changed to an "i"combined with the fact that you do moderate, albeit it only occasionally. Note the list of folks above -- save for the frequency of moderating, they all fall in this category.

EDIT: Also note that, although the URLs have the "i" "l" switcheroo, their profile names are "exactly" the same as the real person's!

Maybe you could talk ustream into changing their font lol.

Impersonator found

I had installed IP tracking software on my chat a long time ago when I had 3 people spamming my chat room with hateful pm's and invites to other shows.

Just 2 weekends ago I caught someone logging into my chat as me with the "i" changed to "l". I banned them immediately.

When I have time I will have to scan through my logs to see who it is, but I can tell you just from the IP i can see it from Upstate NY. I prolly don't need three guesses.

Whoever it is appears to be doing it through Ustream by setting up accounts there with the letter change. Pretty low tech. Also someone with lots of free time on their hands like they are retired or a kid.

Bob Cmbwsu has brought it my attention that someone has been using my name as well as "cmbwsu, propoolplayer, upstateal, pool4u, worldalvin, calired, diamondproam, lenny-the-loser, f4steddie, and calired.

Sometimes, several names at once. Bob has taken screen grabs and sent them to me to let me know. I don't know who this is and I dont even want to guess... but its childish. Who knows how much damage has been done or will be done with our names. I wonder if they know our passwords or just have a way to replicate our names.

Anyway, I just wanted to let everyone know this is going on and to be careful.

That is the same trouble maker from Illinois. The "L" in poolactiontv is clearly a capitol "I".

YOU came on my show as BlGTRUCK though, not that guy. Maybe you thought it was funny so YOU would try it too. Who knows.

Thats same guy has other IP's too. Prolly his aircard.

This guy has caused MANY streamers a lot of extra un-needed work.

What's funny is the guys doing the most internet chat spamming and pm hating are ALWAYS the same ones who think the person they are hating is doing it to them too. Must be a miserable way to exist.

First off, you hyper linked the first IP as an email and when I clicked it I got this:



Anybody can click this and see this is true.

Secondly, the spammer has been known to change proxies, much like many people do to pick up streams that are on BBC in the UK. We almost banned CaliRed by accident because the spammer had been using his exact IP. Luckily we decided to wait and see what comments were made and check his profile. There were others as well. With that, how do you know for absolute certain that this was in fact "the real" UpstateAl --> the guy who has been working tirelessly to rid the streams of this person. Even during times the spammer was using "your" username! You don't suppose the person is putting wedges between folks and sitting back laughing at your accusations do yea!?

Why is there always a "gang" reference with you ... again, are you absolutely certain it's not the spamming poser using other people's usernames and proxy IPs? Hundreds of hours have been spent by UpstateAl trying to get to the bottom of who is doing this and you want to accuse him? He and I monitor over 1,100 streams and you monitor one. We moderate on numerous streams and have to deal with this way more then you do. So who has the biggest issue with "whoever" this person is? The spammer has proven to be able to be in chat using at least three usernames at once with three separate IPs at once (see above). You will note that the Senior Ustream Mod (Snowphoenix9999) was called in by us! Why are you trying to put the blame toward UpstateAl -- the one who is working in the background with Ustream and broadcasters trying to put a stop to this?
