I wonder what the player was expecting. That's a little over 5%. I probably would have tipped 10%, but if I were the player, and I got a $400 tip, while I might think "yeah, he could have given me a little more", I'd be happy to have at least received a jelly roll. I've seen people win big on the side and not tip a nickel, so a $400 jelly roll isn't looking too bad to me right about now.

I think Archie the Greek won like a million playing pool (no horsesh*t). Ernesto Dominguez got to coach him, if I remember the story right. Someone can jump in here and correct me if I'm screwing the story up. I won't take a guess at the numbers here because I honestly don't remember but, in that particular case, I remember thinking that Ernesto should have received a MUCH bigger tip than he did. Granted, he wasn't playing, but he was instrumental in Archie winning.

In this particular match the $6K wasn't in side action. It was in the middle. The player assumed he was basically being staked. He put the action together.

We all know what happens when you assume.

I could almost agree with you if the the action was all on the side.

It is still kind of ridiculous that people tip waiters 20% but consider 5% good enough for your horse. I know, I know each situation is different, I'm just sayin.

I thought it was when a couple of railbirds, completely out of the action and not stakehorses, made a wager on the game....the winner, out of appreciation, might throw the player 5-10% for his good fortune...

I thought the the guy fronting the player was a stakehorse, and he paid the player anywhere from 30-50% of the winnings??? :confused:

Justin, seems like your in your story, the player not just got hosed, but was basically cheated....or am I getting all this mixed up :confused:

Nope. You pretty much got it right. Everything happened very fast and no arrangement was made. You know how it is, someone says "Bet this" and someone tells the player "Go ahead and play" without stipulating the split.

Player wins and the horse is either greedy or stupid and throws the player some crumbs.

This is how people get dumped.

oh... well in that case, I think jelly to the player is nice, but it definitely shouldn't be standard. I mean, its not like you're his backer and he's getting his cut. You would be making a bet outside the action, its your money, so you should keep it.

I let Bruce Berrong borrow my Mace break/jump for the finals once since his tip came off. When he collected his money he turned around and gave me $25. I told him no, but he insisted. So some of the players do return the favor, but I'm sure that are as many who would just pocket the money.
 
My Opinion

I have gambled for a long time and have been involved in $5.00 a game action to $10,000.00 a set action... I have staked players in tournaments and have also bought people in a calcutta... There are circumstances when I do give Jelly to players... But for the most part Jelly is stupid.... When I invest my money I will have a arrangment with a player before the game starts... So Jelly is not expected.... Anything I do on the side... Means exactlly that. (on the side). I do not feel that a player is intitled to any side action... For starters, how do they know what kind of deals or what you have done in the past with the person you are side betting with.. Thats how trouble starts... You give Jelly to this player then , on another occasion this player over hear expects it.... Alot of things get involved.... Thats why I do not fool with side Jelly.... If a make good money off a player in a calcutta I will throw Jelly.. Specially if he dosnt buy half his self..... IfI get a chance to put a good player in a Tournamnet, I will 100% give jelly because I shouldn't have had that bet to start with anyway.... What i mean a good player is almost always guaranteed money in a Tournament... So if the player is willing to give up part of his Tournament action. I am greatful... These are just MY beleifs. Everyone has different methods... The only thing I feel very strong about. IS . When a player starts Expecting or even asks for Jelly, they get Squadush>>

walt you sound old school as am i.these new players and nitty locksmiths know nothing about being stuck 5k and losing the second set when your player unleashes the heart of an elephant and 2 hrs later you are 10k winner.when your player is the strongest player at the trny until 4 unexpected players show up and your player plays his freakin guts out and wins anyway.people that dont take care of other people that make them money find themselves in a spot where nobody ever calls them when big action is going off and people just dont mess with them period.if you truely gamble you will book losers and winners,it happens but i know this much,take care of people and they will take care of you!
