Based on this discussion, I ordered the Rempe-Ginky match. What a great one. Rempe has long been one of my favorite straight pool players, and to hear his commentary was priceless. The one thing that he repeated several times and that continues to ring in my head is, "make the ball." One would thing such rudementary commentary would be worthless. But for me, having screwed up countless runs trying to do too much, it was salient advice.
I was a disappointed that Ginky didn't do better in the match. I knew Ginky as a teenager at Chelsea Billiards Ginky when he just began playing seriously. And I watched him grow into a monster player in a very short time under the tuteledge of George Mikula. He was such a great kid and so dedicated. His passing is tough to accept.
I did want to say, though, that although Ginky didn't have much representation on the DVD, he did flash a bit of brilliance, finishing off a rack after Rempe missed, when he had next to nothing to work with. At the end he nudged a ball free and wound up with a pretty good break shot, when I, while watching, thought he had absolutely nothing. It was a glimpse at Ginky's superb imagination and execution.
