can anyone recommend some good straight pool dvds, matches not instructional videos; although a good 150 and out is a darn good instructional video as well.

Thanks in advance!

The price is certainly good on those. The commentary is a little weak. Tony Robles and Danny Barouty are pretty good with the commentary on the ones they do.

Engert Robles is a good match. Engert has a nice smooth rhythm that is worth emulating.

And if you like watching players staring at the table forever trying to figure out what they want to do, don't miss the 3 1/2 hour long semi-final match between Max Eberle and Thorsten Hohmann. :(

Player Reviewed Matchesr

In my book, player reviewed matches are hands down one of the best learning tools. And nobody does it better or gives you more information on the why, what, where and when of what he's doing than Jimmy Rempe. Pick up the Accu-Stats 2000 US Open player reviewed match between Rempe and Ginky and you won't be sorry. Not only does Jimmy load you up with information of what he's doing and why, but he tells you what Ginky is doing wrong. This DVD has been a huge help to me.

Dallas West also does a pretty good job commentating his 100-ball run. But Rempe is by far and away the best IMHO. In addition to his commentary on his match with SanSouci, he also has his own 100-ball run video with commentary as well as an instructional video on how to run a rack of straight pool from various break shots. Invaluable material to have.

Edit: I just realized the OP asked for matches and non-instructional videos, but you can't get any better instruction than runs with commentary. OP should still check out Dallas West's and Jim Rempe's 100-ball run videos.

Based on this discussion, I ordered the Rempe-Ginky match. What a great one. Rempe has long been one of my favorite straight pool players, and to hear his commentary was priceless. The one thing that he repeated several times and that continues to ring in my head is, "make the ball." One would thing such rudementary commentary would be worthless. But for me, having screwed up countless runs trying to do too much, it was salient advice.

I was a disappointed that Ginky didn't do better in the match. I knew Ginky as a teenager at Chelsea Billiards Ginky when he just began playing seriously. And I watched him grow into a monster player in a very short time under the tuteledge of George Mikula. He was such a great kid and so dedicated. His passing is tough to accept.

I did want to say, though, that although Ginky didn't have much representation on the DVD, he did flash a bit of brilliance, finishing off a rack after Rempe missed, when he had next to nothing to work with. At the end he nudged a ball free and wound up with a pretty good break shot, when I, while watching, thought he had absolutely nothing. It was a glimpse at Ginky's superb imagination and execution.

Jim Rempe is a knowledge master when it comes to 14.1. I would think anything from him would be a great learning tool! I think John Schmidt is also an excellent teacher of the 14.1 game. Any of his DVDs would help your game.

recommended 14.1 video

It's not a DVD, but I'd recommend the Dan Barouty - Steve Lipsky match that Steve has posted on vimeo -- see http://forums.azbilliards.com/showthread.php?t=221080&highlight=barouty There is excellent playing and excellent information on this video. Plus, if you like the player review format, this video is a double player review.

I'm lobbying Steve to find a way to put this and other video of Steve's matches with Danny on DVD. Even though I've already seen the match, I'd gladly buy it on DVD so I can play it again on a tv or tote it around and watch it on my laptop when I don't have internet access.

You won't be disappointed.

In terms of Accu-Stats 14.1 videos, I like any video where either Grady Mathews or Dallas West is doing the commentary. Accu-Stats also has a DVD of Jose Garcia playing a solid match against Mike Massey. JG shows how easy the game can be when the player is controlling the cue ball.

Accu-Stats also has a DVD of Jim Rempe playing Thomas Engert. It's a rare George Fels commentary (with Jeremy Jones), and Mr Fels is predictably excellent.

Hi Larry!

Thanks for the recommendation for the Engert-Rempe match. I just ordered it. I love Engert's game.

Last night I watched the Rempe-Ortmann match. This match is distinctive because both players make long runs and it is a real see-saw battle. What I really appreciated is how Rempe, after being hit with a long run, and being down almost a hundred points, chips his way back. His first few racks were fraught with bad rolls and difficult layouts, yet he persisted, one shot at a time, with determination and patience. He had to make a number of really tough shots to hold things together. Very impressive performance and I match I highly recommend. Also, Jeremy Jones provided excellent commentary. I had no idea Jeremy knew straight pool as well as he does; he was articulate, insightful and informative. Great job, JJ.

Hi Doug! Yes, I have that match (I got the set from Seyberts). In fact, that set of DVD's was my first exposure to Engert's game. He's a monster shotmaker and a superb technician. Sad to say, we don't hear a lot about him on this side of the Atlantic. Although, he did win the Challenge of Champions not too long ago. In any case, he's a big-time talent and on a very short list of the top straight pool players in the game today.

Hello Ted!

FYI, also sent you a private message (or tried to -- my technical skills are not fantastic). It's been a while, so thought I should try to catch up with you. Hope all is well.

Had been away from playing regularly for a few years, but then got lucky (!) and broke my arm playing tennis, which meant I had to cut out other sports but could still play pool once the cast came off. Now, I'm playing more pool and starting to get back into it.

If the pm did not make it through, let me know and I'll try again. Also, my email address hasn't changed if that's easier.

Take care,
Larry

Larry, I got your PM and replied. Check your "Private Messages," it should be in there. If not, perhaps it is my technical merits that need addressing! LOL
