Straight pool

i went to practice to today for a couple of hours and decided to give some straight pool a go. now i know the game pretty well from watching loads and loads of videos, but i've barely ever played it - at least not for a long while and back then i was still learning to hold the cue when i gave it a go last..

anyway although i didn't expect to be running hundreds or anything, i hoped maybe to run a couple of racks! but man the game is so mentally demanding! even the simplest shots become difficult if they're not straight in. and having to think so much on every single shot was so taxing on my brain - it was a welcome relief to go back to 9-ball afterwards where i can see the pattern with half a brain cell.

I didn't get down or anything, obviously like i say i know the game so i expected it to be difficult - but still it didn't fail to shock me again with how difficult the game is compared to how it seems!

in the end i must have managed a seven or eight high run at most. i was getting so bogged down!

seeing the straight pool patterns must be some sort of god given gift!

my already huge mass of respect for the great 14.1 players increases!

It's awesome game eh :)

Come over to the straight pool forum, usually no petty bickering, and lots of pattern discussions

I hated straight pool for years. I ran 5 racks of 9-ball many years ago, bur would buy champagne if I made 30 in 14-1 at the same time...

Now I love to play straight pool, practise it almost every day. I make 20-30 and 40 often, so I guess that my high run of 49 will soon be broken. But I don't rush it, the most important thing for me is to have a high average.

Anyway, I am glad that you played some 14-1. Try to play it as often as you can, and a very good advice is to play it together with a better player. Play every second shot, and discuss what to do. After a few times you will start to think the way he does, and it will improve your straigth-pool-knowledge pretty fast.

Good luck

The hardest EASY game you will ever play.

It is not a god given gift. The more you play and watch the easier it is to see the patterns. I am sure that the first time you played 9 ball you didn't see two rail position like you do now.

Straight pool requires much more cueball control, but less shot making. It is very easy though to lull your stroke to sleep. Once you have a half difficult shot in a straight pool run it looks impossible.

Keep playing it though, your other games will improve.

I love the game.......its the caddilac of pool games. I predict it will be the game of the future as all the other games are getting too easy for the top pros.

I ran 96 last week on my tight GC IV.

Try some equal offense. I like it better than straight pool because you use the whole table, and you still have to execute the 14.1 break shot to get a score of 20 for an inning. It is a good way to practice your shotmaking and position play.

I agree 100%. More and more are playing 14.1 everyday and see the challenge to the game, and thats what pool needs, challenge.

Playing straight pool and getting through two whole racks is a highlight... been a while since I've done that. I always feel like I should be able to get through one rack easily, but it doesn't happen often.
