** Straight Pools Popularity ** Look at Accu-Stats NOW **

14.1 is a great game. Anyone starting off should play it until they can run a few racks and learn position. I love the game and cut my teeth on it. IMO 14.1 players try to make the game sound much harder than it is. Johnnyt

Agree with you and Gerry, both!

14.1

I can't speak for anyplace else other than NYC.
Players here were put on a waiting list to participate in the 14.1 league.
MCP.

Everyone at the DCC who would have watched it was prolly in bed so they could catch their flight or get get ready to drive.

Freddie <~~~ but that doesn't explain the Huidji See vs Alex Lely Semi-final

Man I would so love to start a Str8 pool league in SC. We would only need like 10 people.

Is this the thread where the Straight Pool players come to complain about how
boring 9/10 Ball is?

Because their upset no one wants to watch their supposedly far superior game.

I actually like Straight Pool just not the pompous attitude so many players of the
discipline seem to carry with them.

Just maybe if some of you would stop trying to force feed to people what a superior
game it is more people would give it a try. (Just A Thought)

You can start one anywhere. We're in our 9th year of the 14.1 league and we cut it off at 26 players of all skill levels and ages. Arguing over what the best pool game is as stupid as arguing over what the best kind of ice cream is. Different people like different things. I like one pocket because it requires the most knowledge and ability to play it well. There's just not enough going on in the other games for me. That's just me-if you're satisfied with vanilla, eat vanilla.

Don't know if anyone answered this but I stayed up and watched the 14.1 and Dennis Orucllo won it easily. It was pretty remarkable to see him set the two big fake hecks for $30k on the rail and then turn around and play like that for $3K. A real BMF'er.

Let's not take today's popularity ( or lack there of) for 14.1 out of context.

There is something else that isn't popular like it used to be. The younger generation no longer likes to use their frigging brains for anything but a crooked or backwards baseball cap.

Naturally the redundant monotony of pocketing balls by number after aimlessly smashing them apart is right up the alley of today's generation. There is nothing surprising about any of this.

Here here. A quote from comedian Pete Holmes is appropriate here:

"The difference between knowing and not knowing is so short, life is meaningless".

Sure, 14.1 isn't as popular as it once was, but did anyone take a minute to stop and think about the obvious?

The finals didn't start until well after midnight. People are tired, and need to drive home or catch a plane. The Superbowl is on that night.

I'm not saying it would have been a packed house, but I'm certain if the finals had happened earlier in the day, then more people would have been there to watch.

It is indeed frustrating to see a great game die before your eyes. :frown:As an avid straight pool player it is mind boggling that people describe this great game as "boring" and that nobody watches the finals of a great event. You can invent all sorts of fancy explainations for why that is, but I think it is easy. People can't see the beauty of the game, they don't understand what is going on and they can't be bothered to learn. One can complain about it as much as one wants but it's the cold, hard truth. What makes me upset, is the way some blame their boredom with the game on the game itself, rather than their own limited understanding of it. It's as if someone who knows nothing about chess watches a chess game for half an hour, and then dismisses chess as a "boring" game. Of course they are right, in regard to themselves they are the best judges of what they find boring (even if they may learn to love the game after a short study), but when they then start mouthing off and claiming tic tac toe is a superior game, then it is hard to hold ones tongue.

It's not the most exciting game for me yet, but I'm brand new to the game, and haven't really gotten to play it yet with anyone who knows what they're doing. However, Mosconi is one of my heroes in the game, and really want to learn.
